End of day these guys were going home to get ciffy jobs. A good report would help get employment after war
Fond in his brothers wallet when he passed away .Copy of original 40 to 50 years after he received it from dad
56 Recce were at Colchester between 12 April and 12 August 1942, not sure what you want to know about Colchester Hospital but it can be found on the web, i.e. Colchester Military Hospital Mrs Maclean’s memoir: a nurse at Colchester garrison in WW2 However, depending upon the circumstances, I assume there is a chance he went to a civilian hospital. As you won't get medical records probably never know. Don't think that you have posted his service record, other than the release for which doesn't give any details. If you want more help on his service I would suggest you upload the full set. Date of photo? Fairly early I would say as he is not wearing a medal bar.
This is part of dads service record showing colchester hospital. Note at top dad gets 10 days detention by c o for absence while with york and Lancaster. Mum told me he was late back to barracks by 1hour while on leave due to my older sister who was about 8moths old being ill. And having to walk back to barracks a distance of 8. Miles more or less
Page from dads war records. Note medals issued 22 june 1950. None of us ever saw these medals. Must have put in something and over time got lost ? I do know we moved house 4years later may have got lost moving house. I did get replacement medals to replace the lost one,s. Like to say thanks to every one who posted to me
If you followed my link to the 56 Recce diaries you will see the regiment moved to Uckfield on 17 May 1941 and were there until 1 October. They then had short spells at locations in Chiddingfold and Fernhurst before moving to Chadacre on 19 November. Google Maps Your father spent a day with 140 Field Ambulance before his admission to Colchester MILITARY Hospital on 30 May 42, the diaries give details of what was happening that day. The 21 days is important, see this post, and explains his move to 46. Probably in hospital for longer, presumably until 24 August. By this time 56 were well into preparations for Operation Torch, the convoy left 15 October, so I would guess he was not considered ready. Info on Y List please!
Thanks for that information. On y lists seems to make sense for dad being inhospital 21 days and put on y list. Is their any information on scarbourgh barracks. Remembering mam saying dad went their after leaving hospital. After aspell of leave at home. Or i could be wrong
With his leave added. Dad did 5 years 166 days .pension 5 years 125 days. What happened to war pensions if not claimed
Hi, Don't understand what you mean re unclaimed war pensions? He appears to have been subject to normal demobilisation process to Class Z Reserve. No mention of discharge on health grounds so appears no entitlement to sickness/injury/pension? Or are you under the mistaken impression that all personnel who served received a pension on discharge? Steve
Bazz, replying here as I think it would be better to keep all the posts in one place, it all gets a bit complicated if it is spread all around, especially parts of his service record, difficult to keep track of. To answer your question yes. Also, on overseas service there was malaria, typhus and all sorts of disease around, again the war diaries often make mention of this and give warnings of what precautions troops should take. [Any MODS watching that could move them over?] Info on Y List please!
