I thought the attached might be of interest to our members. On the 21st May 1983 I was visiting the RAF Museum with my Brother and Grandfather when he pointed to a group of gentleman and suggested we may like to ask for their signatures. When asked who they were my Grandfather said they were 'The Dambusters". Every gentlemen in the group was kind enough to agree and it turned out they had gathered for the 40th year reunion. As 11 and 12 year old kids it didn't quite sink in who we were in company of... certainly does now!!! The white document has original signatures but unfortunately the blue is only a photocopy as the original has been lost.
Even though you weren't aware at the time it must still be nice to know you met them once. If that happened today it would be selfies instead of signatures.
Hi Andsco. I had some awareness of how special this group were but it is only as I grew up and learn't more about the raid that I realised what a privilege it was to have met them.... I wonder what the gentleman would have made of a selfie request ps ... when I was in the army I would canoe on the Mohne as it is where the BAOR sailing club was.
That must have been quite an experience knowing the history and with the size and expanse of the place. Here's a link to the history of the dam, from it's construction to the destruction not just to the dam but also the surrounding area and the widespread damage beyond. Andy Möhnesee Dam
