Cant's wait! Do you know if it's going to air in the US? We get the BBC, in fact, it's about all we watch as American TV, except the public channels, is so awful.

At long last the Yesterday Channel has given details about this documentary series, see below for full details and note the first showing is on Tuesday 29th November.

Main announcement on the YESTERDAY CHANNEL website
    After The War Was Won

WWII's ability to produce new and moving stories of courage, emotion and struggle knows no bounds, and during the years we've heard so many incredible stories from the frontlines.
But here in Blighty, a population had to live through terrifying bombardment and make do while their loved ones were fighting abroad. So when the war finally ended both those at home and those fighting abroad suddenly had a lot of adjustments to make.

This emotional series tells the story of the people who were left in the UK during World War II, what happened when the war had finished and how everyone had to adapt after such a six-year ordeal.

On the one hand the country felt sheer joy and relief of the victory and the anticipation of a hero's welcome home. But the reality was often different - a soldier often returned home to an ill-fitting suit, a family of strangers, no work and the nightmares of war still vivid inside their heads.

Episode one goes back to days after VE Day, when the operation to bring over four million service men and women back home began. Everyone received a number – one to 78 – and the higher the number the longer you had to wait.

As demob parties raged across the country, some had to wait agonisingly for their big welcome home. Some were even sent on peace-keeping missions far from their families. The war was over, but for many home was farther away than ever.

With first-hand testimony from those who fought and had to adjust to life back home, After The War Was Won tells the story of a nation trying to get back to its feet, and back to as normal a life as possible.

The brave men and women who fought for our freedom in World War II reveal what life was really like when returning from frontline duty to start afresh in post-war Britain.

I have to tell you that after numerous radio & TV interviews over the years I cannot remember ever receiving a single penny compensation.

What then makes us agree to be televised ?

Speaking strictly for myself, I think it must be the innate desire to leave behind a record of one's very existence, plus, of course, a good dollop of vanity :)

One can only admire your continued sacrifice for the Commonwealth! :D

I recall Tom Canning saying a while back that he was determined to live to at least 150 so that he could make sure that the government paid him back what he had paid in... I like the way he thinks!

    Best,

    Steve.

Oh me? I dread seeing myself on the Box. You will recall I had taken part in previous TV programmes, And what did I see? An old man nattering on about times long past.

Thanks for all that Ron. Hope you are keeping well, along with all our other Veterans here. Truth is we are pushing along in age terms now...

As Ron said I have never had a penny for appearing on TV. Why did I do it? For the same reason that I continue to write... Years ago an old Vet said "You have a duty to tell what it was like, for when you go you take it all with you" His inference was that we that survived should tell it as it was for those that never came home...A lofty ideal...But in some ways I think it has worked. Do I like appearing? No definitely not...Specially live broadcasts.
