Damn, seems my freeview box has decided to do away with the yesterday channel, even though I have retuned it 5 or 6 times this weekend.!!!

I Really do dread looking at the old fellow. I have the two copies of the previous BBC TV programmes, and they show this white haired old bloke nattering on.YUK

'Time and tide wait for no man', Brian. I was 29 years old when we moved down south - my son is 29 years old now and I'm a granddad; and it doesn't seem like five minutes ago that we moved here. :)

Anyway, you gave part of your youth and health for 'us' and I am very grateful to you. You will always look like that James Bond, dapper 'Sapper' in your avatar to me... :D

    All the best!

    Steve.

The iPhone/iPad app TVCatchup lists the Yesterday channel as one of the freeview channels it broadcasts.

But something seems wrong with the sound mix - you can hardly hear the narrative, but thankfully you can hear the 1st hand accounts clearly, which is the whole point of the documentary.

Good to see you Brian & Ron.

Agree on the bizarre mixing, seems the music was put forward of the narration.
Demobdoc, give your sound mixing bods a wobble.

Good to see you Brian & Ron.
Why thank you, kind Sir :)

In the cold light of dawn thought I'd make a final report on what my own feelings were on seeing the film.

I thought Brian came across very well and I was pleased to see he didn't pull any punches at the way he felt he was treated on his return to the UK after his horrific injuries.

The film in general, as others have pointed out on the Yesterday website, suffered because of it's terrible sound and peculiar musical background and I noted that it seemed to concentrate on matters romantic rather than military but this was probably because they sought to give it wider appeal.

As to my own contribution, if you sneezed you probably missed it :)

Two solid hours of filming reduced to what I would estimate as one minute of air-time.

At the filming, I spoke at at length about what it was like to come back to a family that was grieving after the loss of a son............. cut without trace..

I supplied a photo showing me wearing the infamous demob suit....just not shown

I spoke at length about listening to the crowds going mad in Trafalgar Square as the war ground to an end....... not a word.

I realise that the above comment probably makes me appear like an offended prima donna but, in all honesty, I regret only the amount of effort that I put in at the time for what I now consider was not even a fair crack of the whip.

Hope you like the pics :)

'Blink & you'd miss 'im' was mentioned in our house too, Ron.
I can't work out if it's a series or not though, as all the episode guide headings have the same description:

    Ron,

Didn't Judi Dench get an Oscar once for about 5 mins of screen time in Shakespeare in Love ? Rest assured, you, like all the others, looked very good and spoke excellently.

I suppose with 40/45 mins of screen time, the producers took the path of least resistance - to focus largely on the social / family side of the house.

Compelling as these stories were, they had clearly set aside limited time for deeper focus on the trauma/psychological issues, those returning with physical ailments, and the issues of getting back into work / finding suitable housing in war shattered Britain.

Associated with what was referred to in the programme, my father said that when he returned after 6 1/2 years away, he was treated "abonimably" by his employers (a reputable Savile Row military tailor as it happens).

Someone needs to be spoken to severely for the dreadful sound quality (with no subtitles) - but at least on the repeat showing this morning, you could actually read the end credits rather than go to a cut away segment about next week's programmes. Another dreadful habit.

From the look of things and looking at the schedules for next week, it looks like a one off programme.

Despite all that, I enjoyed the programme. My Mum (ATS 1942 - 1946) thought that the programme was "odd", most probably because she couldn't hear the narration

Enjoyed the programme apart from the sound mix! Great to see you Ron (briefly!) and well done Brian-great to put a face to the name at last.
Fancy that woman being given a letter carried all the way home by her husband (!) saying what a bugger he had been-living in a brothel for 4 months! She soon packed him off and in the end married her sweetheart who she thought had been killed. It would have been nice to have had at least 15 minutes of each person talking and make up a two hour programme.

Ah Ron looked good....Did he not? but how short his appearance. As to the sound mix? AWFUL...hard to discern what was being said at a times.

As the executive producer of After the War Was Won I was also extremely disappointed at the audio quality of the programme as it was transmitted last night, in which the voiceover was barely audible. I can assure viewers that the mistake does not lay with Epiphany Productions, but was an error made on transmission, as UKTV have confirmed. I am so proud of the programme and am devastated that viewers were unable to enjoy it properly last night. It will be repeated with the correct audio on Sunday at 8pm, so that people can see (and hear) it as it was always intended. The wonderful Hermione Gulliford delivers a lovely voiceover for what I believe is an emotional and warm programme full of fantastic contributors and their amazing stories. I do hope people will give it another chance.

This has just appeared on the Yesterday Channel website so I thought it fair to give it a showing

    Ron,

    thanks for that.

Fingers crossed for the re-showing on Sunday. I noticed that the repeat showing this morning still had the same variable sound quality. Perhaps the Yesterday people just put it on 'play' and went home.

Thanks for the 'heads up' on this Ron, it is much appreciated.

When you agree to your next airing make sure you also agree a minimum airtime showing... Hell, look at the airtime Simon Cowell gets and for what?

I was absent and then busy, during the first showing; helping latterly WW2talk members on and off-line and the whole programme had rushed by. All I saw was Brian telling us how he spent his back-pay on a woman - good to know the world hasn't changed that much then - and 'wham, bam' the programme was over. I was crestfallen!

Now I have another chance to see it... wonderful!! :)

    Best,

    Steve.

Although I am not keen on doing these programmes I must admit that I am a sucker for anyone that asks nicely. I find it difficult to turn them down.

But here I must admit, that I would dearly like to see a documentary about the exploits of my company during the invasion of Normandy, and onwards. Here I believe that so many events were so "Over the top" that it would make a wonderful hour long programme
For instance; who would believe that we pushed a bloody garden roller over Schu mines to explode them...Who in heavens name would believe that we went into enemy territory to play gramophone records.. It sounds so cock and Bull.. but for the fact it happened. So many very interesting little "Cameos of war" I think these should be filmed and retained as info for the youngsters of tomorrow.
