    DeeDee1,

Yes, he is still active and was aboard last Tuesday. You could try a PM as you have over x5 posts. We all have other commitments and we rely on members to help. If they don't that is their choice. You can but ask.

Hi Shin, Many thanks for posting. I'm trying to find out any information on Denis Goodman of Sprotborough, Doncaster. Denis was the husband of my Great Aunt. He fought during WW2 and I believe from the odd conversation with his involved in the fighting in Burma. Sadly I have been able to find out very little regarding his military service and wondered if any of you amazing folk may be able to help.

    Phil_G,

Just sent Shin a Private Message (PM) asking him to check-in, he was here a week ago.

We always recommend applying for a subject's Service Record, it is the definitive record and it is not available elsewhere. It can take up to a year to get it - from the MoD or National Archives. See: Get a copy of military records of service

You will need more than his name and a Death Certificate.

Your subject has not appeared here before, nor his home town.

It is rare to find anything online about an 'Other Rank' soldier, unless they were awarded a medal, wounded, and died. Some research tips next.

Thanks for the swift response. I've been doing family history research for some years and also looking into WW1 and WW2 soldiers. I've drawn a bit of a blank with Denis which I presume, as you noted due to him surviving. I do know at some point he got malaria. Denis spoke very little of his war times but once told me a harrowing tale about a river blood red with decapitated body parts passing him. I'd love to find out more, i.e., his regiment, etc. I've tried searching on ancestry but unless they were killed, there seems to be very little information.

I have a database of over 12000 servicemen and women from the Doncaster area WW1 and WW2 taken from the local press reporting both WW1 and WW2. compiled over years of photographing and logging from the archive at the local library.

Shin checks in irregularly, he was here recently, so I will send him a Private Message (PM) to alert him to your request.

    PM explanation

Greetings from Canada. I was born in Doncaster and am trying to help my mum locate a photograph of her dad Richard 'Dick' Riley and his two brothers Edward and Joseph Riley. All three brothers went missing the same week during WWII and some members of the family claim to have seen the newspaper story from one of the Doncaster papers. Dick Riley, my grandfather, was a Warrant Sergeant with the 5th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters 1939 - 1945. Thank you for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Sorry about the quality of the copy, but the microfiche is well worn. they have the originals at the Doncaster library archive. if you contact them they may copy a better one for you. the photograph can be found on page 4 of the Doncaster gazette 9th December 1943.
