There is this strange fella too, from Bart Vandeveen's 'The Observer's Fighting Vehicles Directory WWII'. A dummy Kubelwagen based on a Jeep for covert operations in the western desert 1942. Driven from the back seat with a dummy propped up in front. Bizarre.

Cor that's brill and very early SAS. Probably best used for getting up to an Italian sentry on a gate or similar in the dark. The guard watching the driver and those in the backseat ready with a silenced pistol.

Those interested in finding out the real story behind the Maskelyne War Magician myth are welcome to check out my website maskelynemagic.com
Maskelyne did produce a dummy Honey in Egypt in April 1941...and he definitely contributed to the design of sunshields, clever means of disguising a tank as a truck, but the really big claims (Alexandria night-time decoy site/vanishing the Suez canal/creation and implementation of the Alamein deception plan) are illusory.

The Photos section of my website includes new images of Maskelyne's camouflage work.
(I will soon be adding a drawing by Maskelyne of the kubelwagen.)

History is not written by the victors. It's written by the victors' ghostwriters!
Alas, substantial portions are fabricated to keep the gullible masses entertained...

Welcome aboard Richard, that looks like good stuff, and a very nicely presented website:
    MaskelyneMagic.com
I think I may have to spend an hour reading through.
(And do feel free to put a link in your signature.).

    Cheers,

Edit: I have to add. Excellent pictures of the sunshield lorry camo:

There's a book in this stuff somewhere... if it hasn't been written already.

I remember reading some time ago of a dummy airfield in the North African desert where the planes were all decoys , and an air raid occurred where the attacking plane dropped a bomb made out of wood with the word 'BANG' painted on it , not sure who's side did what , it's daft enough to be true !:)

Here's one from Ebay, dated 13 March 42, so somewhere in Cyrenaica.

Caption was probably: After a heroic battle, the German Ueberheros in their truck subdued the powerful enemy.

    All the best

Must-see WWII documentary. The remarkable story of a US Army unit who used inflatable tanks, sound effects and sketches to create a deceptive battlefield picture and fool the enemy.

Just watched Kate Addie program "Alamien"
Veteran (40 RTR I think) recounts how dummy lorry structures were placed on his tank which moved position and lorry followed path to hide track marks.

Also from my Fathers Journals pre Alamein

    THE BATTLE OF ALAMEIN
In the evening we began to move, not a word to us of what we were
about, as we moved a coloured Battalion’s troops erected a decoy in the
position we were situated ,they put up canvas mock-ups in our place.
