Excellent shots EB. Thanks for posting.

You asked about the Polish grave with an American flag... that's the grave of 22 year old Richard Tice - an American with no Polish blood in him! He joined the Poles because he'd learned at school that the Poles had helped the Americans win their freedom in the War of Independance, so he wished to help in their present struggle as some form of repayment. He was killed at Driel when some Germans approached his patrol shouting "Don't shoot" in English. Tice and co thought they were Americans and broke cover into a hail of MG and rifle fire...game over!

  5. Thanks y'all. Extra thanks for the information on Tice.

the young school children have adopted graves in the Oosterbeek cemetery, which they pass on to the new starters when they leave school. During the ceremony, you begin to hear what seem to be a lot of birds twittering, then they suddenly enter the solemn proceedings and take their place by "their" grave, ready to talk to any relatives or visitors.

Just like train and aircraft spotters, they throng the coach doors, looking for veterans to sign their autograph books and can tell them when they were last there!

It's a truly moving place, and Arnhem seems like an English town in the 50's....

They made us so very welcome when our small contingent from the Hockley RBL Pipe Band were there to play at the Air Resupply Memorial just a little way up from the Cemetery gates....

Gone very dusty here, must get a tissue....
