My late father was an "Engine Hand IC" in North Africa, and I'm trying to work out what their role within the Squadron/Troop would have been. He was previously a Fitter, so I'm guessing it was to do with maintaining compressors/pumps/etc. Would they have had motorised pumps at wells? Google has not been any help, despite trying various word combinations. Many thanks

From the job description ,I would say he was an assistant ,ie ,a hand ,an individual working on IC (internal combustion) engines. In this case since Squadron/Troop are referred to, it would indicate work on tank or motor transport vehicle engines..
