Sounds like your Father was in 1st Battalion Essex who served in Egypt then India -with 23rd bde - so your best bet is to get his service records - someone will pop up with the address etc shortly

    Cheers

    Hi Trudie,

The various sites for details on how to obtain relative's service records seem to have moved to this site recently:
    https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records#how-to-apply-for-service-personnel-records

As well as the £30 fee it might take up to a year to obtain a copy of the service record due to high demand at present.
Don't let that put you off though, obtaining to the record is undoubtedly the essential first step in tracing your Dad's wartime history.

If you have any other info (eg photos) try posting them here. It is amazing what some members can deduce from small details such as uniform, cap badge, awards and even the background of the photo.

Good luck in your research and let us know how you are getting on.

    Mike

Hello and welcome to the forum. 1 Essex were indeed the only Essex Bn to have gone to the far east during WW2 but he may have been with other units or transferred out of the Essex Regt at some point so like the others have suggested the service records are the best bet first to avoid any goose chasing ;)

    Good luck !
