I realize this post is quite old, but it struck me funny that not 2 weeks ago my father was telling me about Wif Manning. They played together on the regiment football team...

Wilf Mannion was one of the greatest inside lefts ever to play for the England Football

(soccer) team unfortunately at that time- early 50's - the England managers were too

socially conscious in good (sic) company and were embarrassed with Wilf's very humble

upbringing and social manners and he never did play too often for England- to-day of

course thing have changed and they now allow hooligans to play for them- and wonder

    why they keep losing ..
    Cheers

Tom, I may have my info wrong, maybe you will know... the man that dad played against was from Q battery and was captain of Englands soccer team. He was killed in action, but I didnt think to ask in which country.
In the mean time, I'll ask dad for more info.

you have me scratching my head now - as the Wilf Mannion I was referring to survived the war and played for England and lived a quiet life in Middlesborough for many years

can't think who was England's captain and the names of Cullis - Hapgood - Male spring to mind and much later Billy Wright -

    Cheers

Sorry Tom. My mistake. I made an assumption and you know what that gets you ! I spoke to dad and it was Harry Gosling from the 53rd (Bolton) Rgmt. and the Bolton Wanderer's. He played 4 games for England during the war and was killed by mortar fire in http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&sqi=2&ved=0CDwQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk%2FBOLTONcgoslin.htm&ei=IG7OUNLLAYXU9AT5uoHIBw&usg=AFQjCNHJxaQN7UkkbyZyVcPCapWR7mnH6Q&sig2=cySLpFY5IKBiogK1C7nDqw

Scott - it makes an ass out of u and me - the only player in Bolton Wanderers I knew was George Higgins at left back who could handle Matthews - in the '53 Cup Final he was dropped - and Matthews tore Bolton apart

    Cheers
