Sapper, you were so lucky that you had just left the area minutes before. And to think that only this year I found out my Dad was also a Sapper with the RE, but his time was after the war had ended.

I wonder if my great uncle was one of those men who died whilst clearing the mines?

Sapper, thank you so much for allowing me to have your poem "Les Fleurs de Normandie" read at our Church Remembrance Service on Sunday. It was beautiful and very moving as the vicar read it out, and he gave credit to you as the author. There were many comments afterwards about how lovely and apt the poem was for that day. You are now world famous in our little part of the world!

    Thank you :)

</SPAN>68 Years ago, about this time. We laid 4000 mines out in front the East York's infantry.

It would be wonderful to post the casualty lists so that their names are seen again after a life time since they gave their all for our freedom
    The casualties.
The casualties that are included here is not the complete picture, there are other casualties not recorded, this list, is one that "appears" to have been compiled outside of official records. There is one oddity that occurs in this list, that is the very high numbers of those wounded against the number killed, it is in the nature of the Royal Engineers role in wartime that causes this huge imbalance. Some wounded casualty rates are as high as 700% or one dead for every seven wounded!
To illustrate this phenomena I have enclosed the casualty list for a small compact unit-the platoon. Then, I have listed some of the casualties for Third Divisional Engineers.

This list does not contain the names of those wounded.
There are more casualties than those shown here for this company. 246 Field Company R. E. Unfortunately I have not been able to find them all. The list published here, was supplied by the War museum at Overloon, in Holland of all places!
They grow not old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condem....
