Gallery limitations explanation

Good morning, I was hoping to create a decent gallery for the 176 Workshop and Park Company but looking at what I think are the gallery limitations, I think I may be struggling due to the volume of material I have. Material is war diaries, company photos, photos of places the company travelled through in the course of the war.

Are the limitations 50MB total gallery volume, max photo dimensions - none, I think there is a 10MB limit per picture?

I've done high definition scans of some photos i.e. company photo with 200 guys on it to enable people to zoom in to what may be their relatives.

Could someone clarify what the best approach should be for getting a lot of photos into the public domain on this site please.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello, Nigel,
It is so long since I set up the rather clunky gallery that I'm going to have to go through the settings and see what's currently allowed.
If it reflects the forum's settings (it may not, it's a bad plugin), then it may be unlimited but very compressed.
I changed the way pictures are uploaded as the place was creaking, and it's now very unlikely the zooming into detail will be possible.

Give me a couple of days and I'll get back to you with more certainty.
TBH, I suspect opening a new Gmail address with its 15gb of 'Google Drive' storage may be a better option than our gallery.

Sorry I can't answer your queries straight away.

Hi thanks for that. Regarding the Googledrive, I think I know what you mean, but I was wanting to make sure that the photos were stored somewhere public in perpetuity rather than a drive I set up which may become inaccessible at some stage.

    I'll remain poised......:)

    OK,
I've spent a couple of hours in the Gallery settings.
It isn't a clunky plugin, that was the previous iteration. It's a clunky piece of Xenforo software.
I can upload a 40mb image, and it does not compress it in the way the rest of the forum does.
My test profile however, without my admin permissions, cannot upload big files.
I've combed the user settings and the way compression is handled and so far got nowhere.
It does 'appear' to allow unlimited uploads but I'm still not certain about that.

My current tentative conclusion is: Maybe don't use our gallery to curate large/significant/useful collections of images.
I know some do, and they might advise you better than I (and have far more patience than I if they can use this tool effectively), but I fear in terms of capability and usability it's a bit of a toy.

Were I kindly trying to share stuff en masse, I think I would create a Google account, upload things to Google Drive with completely open viewing access and then point people towards files of interest with a thread here.

Will keep looking at the Gallery settings.
Something may catch the eye, but I know I'm far from alone in finding the XF1 backroom settings counter-intuitive and even unnerving. The settings are a delicate balance and it's too easy to screw things elsewhere with a single click.

    Sorry about that!
Trying to be honest about this place's (and my) capabilities.

Thanks for all the research, yes I can understand the less than intuitive settings for the website, very frustrating, been there too.
I could upload individual photos, rather than in a gallery, and make sure that the tagging relates to the 176 Workshop and Park Company. Then add a post alerting people to set their gallery search to that company should they so wish.
I could also set up a Facebook group for the 176, get a couple of other admins involved and put a link on the WW2 forum.
Any thoughts on those two ideas?
