Stan Highway passed away in Montreal on January 28th, 2017 at the age of 101. Stan had served with the 17th Duke of York's Royal Canadian Hussars (Recce) during WW2 and it was my great pleasure to spend time with him over 10 days during our August 2007 tour. Even at the age of 91 he required no assistance and scampered over hill and dale like a man half his age. He drove his car until age 98. A wonderful man. Stan credited a broken leg with saving his life. He broke his playing hockey in the spring of 1944 and as a result, joined his unit several weeks after D-Day. All the men of his former troop, including his replacement, had been killed by the time he arrived in France. George Charles Stanley HIGHWAY's Obituary on The Gazette
I had the pleasure of meeting Stan at several reunions with my late father. He always had a twinkle in his eye. RIP Stan.
