During my last holidays I met a Restistant from Maquis Aigoual-Cévennes.

He just sent me one of his trophies, this helmet.
Useless to say that its initial owner had some... problems of health

Excuse my ignorance but why is it black ?

Have you tried looking up the name Löbel on the German register of war dead ?

Rich, is it not Göbel ?

There are just under 2000 entries for Göbel (Both wars)
Without other data, it'd be hard to find him, that's assuming he was killed.

It could be Diane, I'm hopeless on Sütterlin and anything that looks remotely like it !

Is it easy to see how many of those Göbels are unteroffiziers and how many died in France after the 1942 occupation of Vichy (if my geography is any good) ?

There is a German Office of an organization which takes care of graves ( German Soldiers killed in France) close my house and I asked them but this name is very common

I've been out of practice reading old German fonts for a while myself.:)

Dates of death appear on the results pages but rank, IIRC, requires that you check out each record individually. Not something I'd be keen on doing given the still wide range of date and not even an initial. Again, not being au fait with region and possible cemetery location - if there is one that is, he may be "missing" in sense of both casualty type and perhaps also from the records - the chances of narrowing it down are very poor. The majority of the results were WW2. And, there always is the possibility that whoever wore the helmet and was ?killed, was not the person named.

These are the first 3 pages of a surname only search.

The search engine fields are very specific in their way - see 4th attachment - surname, first name, DOB, Date of death/declared missing, Place of Birth. Designed I think to serve mostly family researchers.

The last attachment shows what some of the actual result records are like... Surname, first name, rank, DOB, Place of Birth, date of death/declared missing, Place of death/declared missing.

    No units are ever detailed.

Cheers Diane. If it was a British 1940 casualty then I'd have the bit between my teeth by now !

I understand what you mean, having chased a few leads myself, but I have been using this engine to look for a particular missing soldier for some time now, in the hope he might have been added. It only makes me realise just how lucky we are to have CWGC - even without the KIA, DOW info that was surely on the original wooden crosses -

... and how very lucky we are to have Geoff's search engine of course!!!

To find this German Soldier, is it an help to know he was in Luftwaffe and he was in the South of France between 1943 and 1944 ?

Hi you could try to go through the results yourself here - remember, no unit information is given.
    Gräbersuche | Suchanfrage
Type in Göbel and click on each entry on each page which fall within the dates you think are correct - and see which ones have been killed or declared missing in the correct area. Some records have very few details besides the surname.

You will have to complete a questionnaire of sorts online, eg giving your name and address and also why you are doing research - fields marked * are compulsory. It's a small formality and will let you straight onto the search page.
