Leaned forum members I would like to be able to compile a full list of those Australians who served in Greece & Crete in 1940-41. DVA nominal rolls do not allow for such a search and an enquiry to Army Historical Unit got me little further than 'Try DVA'. I would guess paybooks may help but then that would be search the lot!!. Any hints would be very much greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards Michael

I would guess you need to know what regiments where there as some sort of starting point

2/3rd Field Regiment (Australia) - Wikipedia
2/2nd Field Regiment (Australia) - Wikipedia

Plus who else - maybe Divisions would be better as they should show all the associated troops. Check out POW lists to give a list of units, check CWGC for a a list of units

Once you have a list on units then you could start researching them for names/nominal rolls etc etc

Depends on what is meant by Australian. There will be men serving in British units that were in Greece/Crete who came from Australia and likewise men in Australian units who originated elsewhere.

Hmm thats not a particularly constructive comment/post - what ideas would you forward to help our junior member colleague to fulfill his needs. I was trying to provide some sort of starting point for them not a clearly defined absolute response.

Again if you want to ask the question "Depends on what is meant by Australian" perhaps that should be directed to post #1, as it would be better if the OP quantified his need, rather than quoting another post

I normally assume that posters are intelligent and will read more than just one response to the post. My post wasn't just addressed to your post

So dont copy just one posters comment - been here before - if you are making a general post then do so, if you quote another members post then you are by inference directing your post directly to them - simples

Thank you for the suggestion on a starting point TD. I have a list of all Australian units who served in either or both Greece or Crete. I believe upwards of 16000 service personnel. Yes it would be a big initial list but it is something I would like to put together as a base for further research. Rather than over-complicate my initial search I would perhaps add 'those who departed from Australia and served there'. I have already a list (likely still incomplete) of Australians (some who give their next of kin as being outside of Australia) who died and are buried/memorialised in mainland Greece or on Crete. This includes some who died while in captivity. Again thank you and any suggestions thankfully welcomed. Michael
