Nicola, Hello and welcome to the forum. I am sure that at least two or three of our resident Veterans who campaigned in Italy will be along and help you out. Good luck with your research. Regards Tom
Nicola - It was around the 13th September 1944 that the 4th British Division started to climb up to your town in the sky - and were repulsed- and went back to the San Martino area on the left flank of the 1st Canadian Division - and the 4th INDIAN division took over the task of liberating San Marino - and were successful and one of their Ghurkha riflemen was awarded the V.C. for Valour in stemming a counter attack and saving a wounded comrade - the 4th Indian Div went from there over to Greece to finish the war. I never did get up to San Marino as we spent two days of rest in Cattolica - on the beach and swimming a lot before being wounded at San Martino and spending a long time in hospitals in Ancona - Bari and Catania - went back to Riccione in 2005 to see the cemetery at Coriano Ridge but didn't travel far as the rains had started Ciao
I'm looking for informations on the Gurkhas and British units that fought and crossed my Republic because I'll want to complete a specific and accurate map and a sort of written research on it. This online book will help. The Tiger Triumphs. The Story of Three Great Divisions in Italy. 1946. Foreword. Table of Contents. Welcome to the forum
Nicola with the "Tiger Triumphs" can be a very long story so I would recommend that you cut to Chapter 13 as this gives you the story on how San Marino was liberated by the 4th Indian Division- without too much damage to the city or the refugees who had swarmed all over the Republic.. ciao
Remember when Despatch Rider with 747 Bridge Co. at village of Filetto. Delivering note on behalf of local girl to the Convent at San Marino. Entry restricted at that time. Approached via mountain vinyards. (What a mistake).
