Good morning everyone, I have joined this forum to interact and discuss with forum members regarding the British Army Royal Artillery's 80th Anti-Tank Regiment, 85th Anti-Tank Regiment and the 125th Anti-Tank Regiment as well as the Australian 2/4th Anti-Tank Regiment that saw action at various stages during the Malayan Campaign. I will also be happy to engage in further discussions concerning the Indian Army's 100th Independent Tank Squadron and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment that were deployed in the Malayan Campaign. Cheers, Peter
Have you ever come across the following publication? A copy exists at the National Army Museum. Picken, Brig. H.W. Nobody’s Own (The History of the 3rd Cavalry and its predecessors) 1841-1945. Eastbourne: Published Privately, 1962. (NAM)
drya67 I know about this rare 1962 book edited by Brigadier H.W. Picken but I have not come across a physical hard copy or a scanned soft copy. In addition to that National Army Museum copy, there is an incomplete photocopied set of 41 pages from 167-207 on the 1941-42 Malayan campaign part, of this 209 page book in the Imperial War Museum collection: Nobody's own the history of the 3rd Cavalry and its predecessors, 1841 to 1945 What I am aware is that a very good condition copy of Nobody’s Own (The History of the 3rd Cavalry and its predecessors) 1841-1945 was listed and sold in eBay sometime back: History 3rd Cavalry (India) Bengal Lancers Afghan war 1841 to 1945 Indian • £130.00
What a shame about the eBay copy. I hope someone bought it that will appreciate it. I did some research at the National Army Museum in the 1990's but did not have time to view the 3rd Cavalry history.
The 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Indian Army under Lieutenant-Colonel Julian Gerald Barnes De Wilton was in constant combat action in Malaya since 8 December 1941 and was the unit that provided rearguard action cover to the 28th Indian Infantry Brigade when they were withdrawing along the Pontian Kecil-Skudai road to the main trunk road and causeway into Singapore on the night of 30/31 January 1942. I don't have the full details as yet on the dispositions of their forces in the Battle of Singapore, but i should have that information in due time.
Family history? No. However, there is a connection between my current avatar image with the obscure Indian Army's 100th Independent Tank Squadron, specifically the models of the obsolete Vickers Light Tanks that arrived in Singapore on 29 January 1942. They were part of Massy Force that saw action very briefly in Swiss Hill and the vicinity of the Bukit Brown cemetery in Singapore, against the Japanese 5th Infantry Division and their armoured support from the Japanese 1st Tank Regiment and Japanese 6th Tank Regiment.
