Hi, this is my first time on any forum like this so apologies if i come across as a bit vague! I am looking for some information about my grandad who was in the RASC during WW2 and the only information i have is his service number and that he was at Dunkirk! I have no idea what company/regiment etc he was in or attached to and neither does the family.

He passed away in 1972 when i was 6 years old so unfortunately i never got the chance to ask him\bout his war career. If anybody has any ideas how i can go forward with this i would be most grateful.

His name was Herbert Samuel Taylor Edwards and his service number was 136224 and his date of birth was 13/03/1918.

    Many thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum Paddy,

Start with getting a copy of your grandfather's service records, see this link
    https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records#service-records-of-deceased-service-personnel
Briefly, you will need to provide copy death certificate and pay a fee, but as he passed away over 25 years ago you will not require consent from next-of-kin (if this is not yourself)

His Army no. falls within the block for RASC, so all that can tell us is that he enlisted with them and not any other unit.

Do you or your family have his campaign medals, paperwork, photos, letters home, AB64? These might well hold clues...

    Good luck with the research

    Hi Paddy and welcome

Definitely get a copy of his service records. I have nearly all the BEF war diaries for units at Dunkirk so once we know his unit I'll be able to tell you where he was on a day to day basis and what his unit was doing.

    Cheers
    Andy
