I’ve been looking at this at my “gut” is telling me it is NOT an I-16 It looks more like the engine from a I-15bis RA-0281G Why?, At the front top of the engine, I see a “scoop” of some type, where the I-16 has none………and as you noticed the “bar” over the mans head, I think this is ONE of the surviving struts that held up the upper wing…. I’m not positive, here’s some photo’s of the I-15bis RA-0281G for your own comparison?? The I-15 was a training aircraft (two pilots) but I can’t see enough of the aircraft to determine if it had two seats or one Mainly its the “scoop” at the front top of the engine that is telling me it is NOT an I-16. UNLESS the early production models of the I-16 had the same scoop??? Just my thoughts
Take a look at this photo if I-15 in maintenance. The first aircraft is a single seater…..the seat shape looks very similar to the shape in your crashed plane………and right behind the seat it looks like a “square metal” tubing that again looks very similar to your crashed plane. I’ve circled the area in RED Opppps, should have added the source: 9 Soviet Fighter Planes of WW2 - Some fantastic Airplanes Here
