Can ANYONE help me find any information about PTE / SGT 4388645 Andrew Graham 1st Battallion Durham Light Infantry, I know he served in Shanghai between 1937 - 1940 and was in Stalag 357 in 1942.

He passed away in 1971 and was a gentle man who never spoke about his experiences. He was my Grandad, He married Carmela Pace who he met during the war whilst he was in Malta. They returned to Durham and sadly my nan Passed away late last year, taking with her all the memories and stories.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or help. Please

    Thanks Gary

    From Ancestry records:

UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 about A Graham
    Name: A Graham

    Army Number: 4388645
    Regiment: Durham Light Infantry
    POW Number: 50098
    Camp Type: Stalag
    Camp Number: 357

As above, apply for his service record, there may also be a Liberation questionnaire he completed after his release http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C14548 and also there is the Int'l Red Cross who may have a record of him - the link I do not have for that.

Would I be correct in assuming he was captured in France during 1940?

I agree with Kyle, it was not unusual for Green Howards to end up in the Durhams and vice versa.

The former had its HQ in Richmond (North Yorkshire) and the latter in Darlington (Co Durham), with only 11.5 miles separating the two.

The 50th (Northumbrian) Division had four battalions of Green Howards and three of Durhams, between 1 July 1940 and 1 June 1942, and then two and three respectively thereafter. Men moved between the two regiments.

    Best,

    Steve.
