Hello, could anyone tell me what the reference underlined in red may mean? I am familiar with the six digit grid reference/eastings/northings etc. But K-52 and A-24 appear unusual to me.. This comes from an IDPF (Individual Deceased Personnel File) for an American airman (Capt. Fleming).
I guess, if you look at the map axis on here... Germany. Reichsamt fur Landesaufnahme You can read a secondary map axis coding that it might match, i.e. there would be a 52 / 24... Screen shot to add.... in a mo. Rm. Edit -
Thank you Ramiles! The attachment cannot be opened or viewed... So they are referring to a German grid rather than the wartime Allied grid...?
Hi Ramiles, thank you. However, the area you suggest unfortunately is rather incongruent with other information I have. If one takes the normal war time grid reference we end up in the area marked below. But the reference K-52 and A-24 in the document would have the northing first and the easting second. This and the combination with the letters K and A seems odd.
K52 is the sheet number. Germany 1:250,000, GSGS 4346 Sheet K52, Düsseldorf (R)A24 is a two-figure grid reference for the 10 × 10 km square for Wesel. Hope that helps. Richard
Hello Richard, this does in indeed help. Thank you very much! Although 10 x 10 km for Wesel will make it impossible to pinpoint where Fleming's plane crashed. Best Alex
Probably you know already, but as they are still missing, i send you this. Her eis writen 1km NE of Wesel. ASN Aircraft accident Douglas C-47A-15-DK (DC-3) 42-92881 Wesel
Thanks, Bedee - I know the web page. But the locations given are very unprecise. Often they are based on Missing Aircrew Reports/MACR (available on Fold3) but these are in most cases unprecise, too. Which is the case here, too.
