Whilst a cause for concern Desertion was not regarded as seriously as in previous conflicts.
For example The 78th Division was regarded as one of the best Mountain Warfare Divisions in the British Army. While stationed in the Apennine Mountains during the winter, morale dropped and 78th Division recorded a very high rate of desertion losing 600 men.
Reading Service Records on the forum one gets the impression that desertion was a greater problem on the Home Front where men knew where to run to and hide, missed their families or had local "distractions" like girlfriends or even petty crime. Perhaps some of the members might be able to throw a light on this.

I will have a look for sure.
I’d also like to get my dads which were stolen in the sixties - he was a lifelong soldier from 1922 - 1950’s.
    Thanks again, Linda
