Philip…..BEFORE YOU ORDER THIS May I suggest that you first go thru the War Diaries of the 5th Cdn Armd Division…..specifically the diaries at the very END of the war. Why you ask? Because this exact information “MAY” be in the War Diaries At the end of the War, CMHQ requested units prepare brief unit histories, and submit them with their War Dairies……so when you go to Canadian Units, you can find many that have “Unit Histories” in them and later some of these were “published” by others I’m not saying this info will definitely be there, but its worth a look first….. Here are the War Diaries for the 5th Cdn Div, both their General Staff and their Quartermaster General HQ……I’m giving you ALL of them but I would look at the dates at the END of the war (Apr 45 and onward). This War Diaries are ALL digitized and are on Heritage Canadiana. Just put the reel number (eg T-10553) into the search bar and the Reel will come up Héritage T-10553 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-General Staff 1941/03-1942/12; 1943/01-1944/08 T-10554 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-General Staff 1943/01-1944/08; 1944/09-1944/11 T-10555 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-General Staff 1944/09-1944/11; 1944/12-1945/05 T-10556 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-General Staff 1944/12-1945/05 T-10557 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-General Staff 1944/12-1945/05; 1945/06-1945/08; 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General 1941/08-1942/12; 1943/01-1944/12 T-10558 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General 1943/01-1944/12 T-10559 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General 1943/01-1944/12; 1945/01-1945/12 T-10560 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General 1945/01-1945/12; 6th Canadian Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General 1942/06-1943/10; CAPF-Base Headquarters-1st Echelon 1945/05-1945/06 T-10568 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General T-10569 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division-Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General As I said, this info “may” be their, or “maybe not”……worth a look though??? AND I might also suggest BRIGADE WAR DIARIES……I usually find these have a LOT more information (including Radio Logs) of “what was happening when” so to speak. If you need the Brigade Reel Numbers, let me know and I can post those for you also Cheers and good luck
Thanks for that, got something to do in the weekend Hope I can spot something about april 1945, altough it seems, it is not photographed in the right order 10557 for example goes all over the place, so will be a good search
My wife's cousin was with the Perth Regiment, 5th Canadian Armoured Division. I had a chance to visit Delfzijl with the help of Stolpi during one of our tours.
Philip, did a little searching….. Here’s a link to the start of the War Diaires for 1 Mar 45 or the 5th Cdn Div - Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General War diaries : T-10559 - Héritage Haven’t gone thru it, just found the page Start of 1 Apr 45 War diaries : T-10559 - Héritage Start of 1 May 45 War diaries : T-10559 - Héritage Start of 1 Jun 45 War diaries : T-10559 - Héritage
Philip, I’m having a heck of a time trying to find the General Staff War Dairies (in order)…..the reels are really mixed up (as you had indicated) BUT, a side note, I did find in the 5th Cdn Armoured Div Ops Log of 3 Jan 1945, mention of an action by the Perth Regiment which I hadn’t seen before…… This is my wife’s father……he was awarded an Military Medal for this fight…..of course Division info is very brief, they actual ambushed a German Company and fought them all night (about 8 hours) until relieved the next day Sorry, I digress, was just excited about getting this info (I have all the Brigade and Unit info on this, but hadn’t thought to look in Division files
If you have any info on a Lt. Fleming, Please let me know. Jock Fleming was my wife's second cousin. Thanks in advance.
I can look for you, can you give me more detail?? Was Lt Fleming with the Perth Regiment? I have done quite a bit of research on this Regiment (for obvious reasons) and willing to look into finding more for you. Any detail you gave give, or information your specifically want me to check, I’d be more than happy to research for you EDIT: Just looked at your previous post and saw that this Lt Fleming (wife’s second cousin) was with the Perth Regiment. I can start looking for info for you. I have nominal rolls (embarkation to England) and can look for anything you wish me to look for??? Cheers
Thanks for the reply. He was an engineer that volunteered for the infantry via the Perth Regiment. I believe he led a Scout Platoon with the Perth Regiment. His brother, Robert Fleming was KIA on June 11, 1944 in Normandy while serving with the Queens Own Rifles. Please see the jpeg of the memorial in Normandy. Jock Fleming was a warrior. He passed away several years ago. Any details you can find on Jock Fleming...greatly appreciated.
I’ll take a look. I’m away from all my reference material for the Perths right now, but will be home (in Canada) again by the 7th June. I do have some with me, so I’ll see what I can find….. Cheers
Thanks for the PM. I await any details on Lt. Fleming. Note to Philip....I did not mean to hijack your original posting. Cheers
