Have just spent a good hour reading all the way through this thread from both Brian and Ron's impassioned pleas for a continuance of their experiences during the dark days of the of the 1939 war when we were in grave danger of being

invaded by the bad guys from Germany- and the many assurances from others that their inputs can never be forgotten etc etc - then had a good chuckle at their input statistics - which are less than my own.....but then I have realised that

our combined inputs have already been compromised by the various fictions - plagiarisms - and opinions by many so called historians authors etc which has had me being known to all and even sundry for being "harsh' on authors - with good

reason I might add as they are bending history all out of shape - and we are STILL here - so God alone knows what they will do with it when we are all gone - just to refresh a few memories the recent hoo haa over the capture of the Tiger -

knocked out by the 48th RTR in Tunisia - The capture of the village in the liri Valley - by the 17th battalion of the 21st Lancers - and the fictionalized version of my own Troop Commanders death which really teed me off and I ripped into the

Author who was living in Victoria at the time- and forced me to write the true version of that time.......and I am sure there are hundreds more.....and the Veterans who know the truth are still here - so what can YOU hope for in say ten years time

This thread is also guilty of bending...no such thing as 1st Canadian Armoured Division- but there was the Cdn 4th and 5th AD's - a Brigade of 1st Cdn did serve in France in 1940 - BUT when Alanbrooke went back AFTER Dunkirk

there are many example all through this thread - way too long to list

    Cheers

the recollections of veterans sparked my interest and the stories from my grandfather helped fuel my youthful ambition to serve. for that i thank all who served their time and i'm 14 years into my own military career with multiple tours of Afghanistan, as well as Bosnia and Iraq. i pray as many of the veterans' recollections and stories as possible are saved for future generations that will not have the WW2 soldiers, sailors and airmen to listen to and learn from.

as for 'heroes return', i think it's a wonderful use of lottery funding (makes a change it's use being something i agree with!) but does anyone on here see todays' Iraq and Afghanistan veterans returning to either country? i certainly do not see myself wanting to return to Garmsir or Basrah in a hurry

So near but oh so far!

For years German military intelligence quietly compiled a dossier of information on Britain. When Hitler gave his generals the order to begin planning full-scale invasion of Britain in 1940, they were prepared. True to form, the intelligence was exhaustive and astonishingly detailed, with every conceivable (and inconceivable) statistic of use to an invading army, together with an analysis of the military significance of each region and aerial photographs and maps of strategic sites.

Here is the book to which Hitler’s generals turned when they planned Operation Sea Lion in 1940. Using one of the one surviving copies found by the Allied forces as they invaded Berlin in 1945 and acquired by the Bodleian Library this is the first time this material has been translated into English and edited to make a single volume.

Sadly there is a price to pay. Not one of personal injury that I speak of. It is rather the loss of great comrades in recent years. I represented the Normandy Veterans in giving lectures on Normandy, to senior schools, universities, Museums, and adult groups and clubs. About 130 plus. In that I had the assistance of my dearest friends Ted Brown Infantry. Derek RE Airfield construction. and Dick Harris Suffolk's infantry. These were truly great friends and They have all departed. The three of us sued to phone and chat about old times with that special Veterans comradeship. Now all are departed. And that is sad... Derek and Ted used to get me into the venues and set it all up for me to give the lecture. Dick Harris was my dearest friend. Sheila and myself used to travel to Sturminster Newton and have lunch at the Red Rose café, and talk over old times afterwards we had our coffee at the old Mill. IT is their company that I miss most of all....... For these were men of great war time experience. Men who had seen it all. I just hope thata special lace will be found for them.. Where ever that is...
