Hello Rusty. Welcome on board. Could you tell us about the work of the Boom Carriers? Did the Boom Carriers work along with the Boom Defense Vessels or were they quite different roles?

Thought you might like to see these pics. Who knows, may be somebody among these men ended up in Boom Carriers?

Some pics from HMS Burgonet in the Med.

    As for photos.

    1. You need to click on the "Go Advanced" tab. This is near the reply box.

    2. On the top row, highlight the little paperclip shaped icon and it will say "Attachments".

    3. Click on this "paperclip" icon

    4. Manage attachments box. Browse to the location of the picture you want to show and click on "Upload".

    5. When done, Send your message.

This probably sounds a bit complicated but the procedure sounds worse than it is. It is pretty simple once you've done it. Give it a go a couple of times.

    Rusty,

I do not know if this is the website you mentioned, but there is information regarding the towing of a Dutch Submarine during WW2.

Dutch Submarines : The Submarines of the Royal Netherlands Navy

It looks to be a good website with lots of information.

The R/C model submarines are really wonderful.

Well, if the Boom Defence thread is about to dry up, maybe I've just joined this forum in time!

My dad served in the boom-defence service in WWII. I have always known this, but only recently got round to enquiring about his naval service. I was curious to know the names of the ship(s) he served in. The letter from the Director of Naval Personnel Office in Portsmouth arrived today. So now I know!

I was brought up in a village in east Fife, where my father and his forebears had been fishermen for generations, and he joined the navy at Rosyth in July 1940. So he started on HMS Rooke, and I was pleased to see that name in earlier posts on this thread. Was it a ship or a shore establishment?

Later he was briefly on HMS Orlando, then he spent about four years on HMS Skirmisher. I think he must have been on her when he was wounded in 1944 in a Luftwaffe raid on Dover. He spent about a year in hospital, then worked at the naval dockyard in Rosyth, in west Fife, which was a major employer of Fife men. As he had his mate's ticket from the fishing, he spent only weeks as an O.S. then A.B. before being made a petty officer, the rank he remained in for the rest of the war.

I had lots of other relatives in the RN, Marines and Wrens, but I think that's enough for a first post!

I've just caught your post, thanks very much for that. I had begun to suspect that HMS Rooke wasn't quite what "she" seemed!

A lot of our fishermen joined up in both world wars and were mostly on boom-defence or minesweeping duties. The East Fife steam-drifters were pressed into naval service and the whole crew overnight became RNR. I think there's a photo in the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther of a drifter crew before - in their fishermen's gear - and after - in their brand-new uniforms! The skippers were given a commission at the lower end of the officer scale.

They offered to defer my dad's entry to the RN to give him time to convert his mate's ticket to a skipper's ticket, then he would have received a commission and been sent off to a war zone. My mum put her foot down - they had two little kids, my big sisters, born in 1937 and 1939 respectively -
and she was worried they would never grow up with a dad. So he went in with his mate's ticket, was made a petty officer and remained in that rank throughout the war.

My mum's younger brother was a baker with a yen for the sea, so come WWII he was straight into the Royal Marines. He served in the Med., where his ship was strafed by Italian dive-bombers, he sailed on the Arctic convoys to Murmansk, and he was on the battleship "Royal Sovereign" when she was only the second allied warship to visit Hiroshima after the A-bomb. So he got his fill of adventure in the end. And after all that excitement, my uncle came out of the war without a scratch, whereas my dad in home waters was nearly blown to bits by the Luftwaffe in Dover and spent a year in hospital.

See Paul Lund and Harry Ludlam's Trawlers Go To War about the RN Patrol Service; it has quite a bit on the Patrol Service' role in boom defence and other coastal and inshore duties.
