Hi again everyone, Another stupid question but i've just received my grandad's marriage certificate and in the profession field the following is written: Stoker C./K.X. 746351 Royal Navy (turner at aircraft factory). I assume stoker was his main role in the Royal Navy but does anyone know what the C. / K.X. are? Also is the number is service number? If it is this would be very helpful. Thanks again, Andrea
C/KX 746351 is his Official No. where C is for Chatham, his Port Division (Welfare Authority). The other main prefixes being P for Portsmouth, D for Devonport and L for Lee-on-Solent (FleetAir Arm). KX indicates he belongs to the Stoker Branch. His rating is Stoker. Higher levels being Leading Stoker, Petty Officer Stoker and Chief Petty Officer Stoker. Don't take Stoker literally, he wouldn't actually be stoking coal fires, he would most probably have been employed in the Boiler Room on oil-fired boilers. Tim
Hello, nearly gave up getting onto this site! Why all the security? It’s like getting into Fort Knox! Anyway, my Dad was on that ship as Chief PO, George Victor Smith (Vic) 1920 - 2018. Based in Singapore at the end of WW2. I have photos if anyone is interested.
Hi - Sorry for late reply but I would love to see any photos. I've got my grandfather's records and he was on the HMS Assistance rom 23 Jul 1945 to 16 Jan 1946. Then it seems he joined the HMS Princess Beatrix and, from a very little amount of reading, I wonder whether he was part f the crew taking her back to Portsmouth.
Hi, my uncle was on HMS Assistance in 1945, his name was Gordon Choake, I am trying to find more information about him, he sent a postcard type letter to my mum in 1945 from Singapore, on the card was a picture of the ship with a number written on the back R105. Any photos of the crew would be great, he was originally from Plymouth.
Hi, my grandfather was on HMS Assistance in 1945 (Daniel Joseph Smith), in Singapore, I have several pictures of the crew and from Singapore (I'm assuming taken at the time, although some could be bought pictures), which I'm happy to share. I've attached one of some of the crew. Unfortunately none of the photos are labelled or dated.
