Having been reading about the wartime exploits of Commander Ian Fleming RNVR I quite enjoyed reading of this particular operation he devised. It never came to fruition but does give an indication of his talents that would be later be put to such good use with his most famous creation.... Apologies if posted previously but I've come across this good website to Ian Fleming's brain child, 30 Commando Assault Unit. Ian Fleming’s 30AU - [his ‘Red Indians’]
Fleming was an extraordinary chap and his own career much more interesting than that of James Bond. Ruthless sounds like a fascinating operation which certainly led to similar attempts at capturing Enigma machines and code books.

Just finished reading Nick Rankin's excellent Ian Fleming's Commandos which is about 30 Commando AU. Rankin shows that a lot of the details and characters from Fleming's fiction was drawn from real experiences and people. For example the pinch of the Lektor machine in From Russia with Love mirrors attempts to extract an Enigma machine. Along with Alan Hillgarth, Fleming planned the campaign of sabotage should the Germans have invaded Spain. The codename for the operation? Goldeneye. This of course was the name Fleming gave to his home in Jamaica and although not a novel became the title of the later film.
Further to the excellent book by Nick Rankin on 30AU I would strongly recommend the following title that is on similar lines and so far has been a quite excellent read: T-Force: The Race for Nazi War Secrets, 1945: Amazon.co.uk: Sean Longden: Books
