NEW YORK (AP) -- A 90-year-old who says she's the woman being kissed by a sailor in Times Square in one of World War II's most famous photographs reunited in town with the Navy on Sunday -- days before she is to serve as grand marshal of the city's Veterans Day parade. Edith Shain of Los Angeles, donning a white nurse's uniform like the one she wore back in 1945, went to see the musical revival of "South Pacific" and posed for pictures, being hoisted off her feet on stage by five of the actors in their Navy whites. On Tuesday, she'll ride in the parade at the head of a contingent of World War II veterans. Its a great picture and has oft been imitated. I like the statue that has been made. I wonder if it is permanent? I liked the photos use in Night at the Museum 2 but didnt apreciate its gratuitus "paraphrasing" at the start of the Watchmen movie.

They concluded that the woman was Greta Zimmer Friedman and that she was wearing her dental hygienist uniform in the photograph. "It wasn't my choice to be kissed," Friedman stated in a 2005 interview with the Library of Congress. "The guy just came over and grabbed!" she said, adding, "That man was very strong. I wasn't kissing him. He was kissing me." "I did not see him approaching, and before I know it I was in this tight grip," Friedman told CBS News in 2012. Friedman died at age 92 on September 8, 2016, in Richmond, Virginia, due to age related health complications. Edith Shain On June 20, 2010, Shain died at age 91 of liver cancer. Verria and Galdorisi's 2012 book stated that Shain could not have been the woman because her height of just 4 ft 10 in (1.47 m) was insufficient in comparison with the height of any of the men claiming to be the sailor.
