Looking at the road and the buildings, and reading the replies given here, I would say Aalsterweg (N69), Eindhoven. Driving from Aalst to Eindhoven center. I have pictures of this road made more in the vicinity of Aalst and the stones look the same. Living near the Aalsterweg and driving up to Eindhoven whole my live, I could say the style of houses is the same as some of the pre-war buildings still standing there.

The road can be seen here (I think around the area you are investigating):

    Example of the houses:

    Hi XrayX
Thank you for the information and the image, it certainly looks like the same road.
I have three photographs in particular which I am unable to trace on Google map, the area is named "VINK" I found the place up on an old Belgian map and it now appears to be the area called "DOOL" the north part of HELCHTEREN, the area I suspect it is (DROOL) is not searchable on Google Maps, is this area some sort of military area?

Is the original photo a fax or photo-copy?

An original print should show the name. The copies posted here are low resolution. A phone capture of an original print would be better.

    Hi
I had been asked to trying to scan and post the image in high resolution, I cropped parts of the image to attempt to make them more visually distinct, this did not work as expected?
have managed to intensify markings on front and side of Amphibian, also the name and image on front of the Tank.
The image on the front of the tank it would appear is a full figure of the dwarf DOPEY from Snow White, the name above the image appears to be DOPEY.
The Photo was taken by a 1st Royal Dragoon (Armoured Car Regiment) and appears to be in Aalsterweg Eindhoven September 1944.
This image is as clear as it is going to be.

I could take better photos of the the location as you wish. It is about 1.5 Mile from my house.

The Dool naar Helchteren is a spot where units of the GAD where. There is a castle/ Brewery there which you could google.

Excellent work R.D., and a positive identification of 'Dopey' H.Q. 5th Armoured Brigade. It would be interesting now to pinpoint the date. Who was the 1st Royal Dragoons photographer?

If the Tank is Dopey and it is the Aalsterweg Eindhoven, than the date would be 18 september 1944.

  15. John,

We appreciate your efforts at scanning your print different ways. However, the results are disappointing, probably because your original print is of a low or "postcard" type quality, I think of the type with a kind of "wavelets" on them which discourages any proper scanning.

If it had been on a normal analogue (silver) photographic paper, then the results should have been much sharper, but as it is, we are left to guessing. For example, the only thing we can say for certain about the foremost DUKW is that it is vehicle number A23 (23rd veh in 'A' pl), whereas a good print should have revealed whether the circle on the left is a Beach Group emblem or the unit's. Same goes for what looks like the vehicle's nickname, apparently two words, the second one possibly looking like 'BETTY'.

As Michael said, a good print should show the Sherman V's name distinctly. As it is, it might be DOPEY, but this might also be any other name ending with "Y", supposing this last letter is not a trick played by the scanning.

I have also been trying to locate the photo, to no avail thus far.

'Betty' appears on the front of the DUKW as well.

  17. Excellent locating XrayX & John! Corner of Aalstreweg & Floralaan West it is then. Photo is looking South. Coordinates approx lat 51.4167° long 5.4832°.

    HI XRayX
If you could take a photo sometime and pass it on it would be appreciated, on Google maps it's hard to get the correct angle also bearing in mind the photo was taken with a 1940's camera.
I have attached two photos which are supposed to be the same place, one photo is named as "Termond" and the other "Vink" as you will see they are both of the same place and I suspect they are in "VINK"?
Again they are 1st Royal Dragoons regiment, 1944 August/September, any help locating this place would be appreciated

I will try to take the pictures next week or this weekend.
The photo's of Vink and Termond don't look like my area.
Termond sounds familiar, in Belgium I believe.
    Beautiful pictures for sure!

*edit: Termonde is also called Dendermonde maybe this is the place?
