    Leslie Gilbert Illingworth - Wikipedia

Leslie Gilbert Illingworth (2 September 1902 – 20 December 1979) was a Welsh political cartoonist best known for his work for the Daily Mail and for becoming the chief cartoonist at the British satirical periodical Punch

"Illingworth's first cartoon was published in the Daily Mail in November 1939, a few weeks after the declaration of war between Britain and Germany. His cartoons until 1945 primarily deal with the war, the battles and the political conflicts behind them. The 'Battle of Britain', the bombing of Pearl Harbour, the fall of France, the battles in north Africa, Stalingrad and the liberation of Italy and France are events which feature prominently in the cartoons.
The purpose of many of the cartoons was to raise the morale of the British public by showing Hitler cowering in fear, and emphasising the battle victories of the Allies. But Illingworth was not afraid to criticise where he thought necessary, especially after losses in the Far East due to inadequate air defences.
The characters of the war are essentially important in the cartoons. Illingworth portrays Hitler, Mussolini and Franco as cowards, France as a prisoner and Churchill as a man of bravery, leading the army into battle. Montgomery, Stalin and Goebbels also feature predominantly in the collection."

How does Low stand regarding Illingworth?
Bill Beadle was somewhat left wing and a fan of Low.
Before the war he worked as an advertising executive for the Crawford Agency Crawford's Advertising Agency - Wikipedia
Having been tutored by Sidney F Wicks, who knew Lord Crawford who offered Bill a job preparing advertising brochures for Thomas Cook Lunn Poly and other Travel Agents.

Next to me (on the other side being a wall) I have a blasé and regular Major with fine cavalry moustache who is amusing in his way.
Though yesterday tempers became rather frayed when he launched into an attack on Low, of whom he thoroughly disapproved as an inciter to class hatred.
My defence of one of my great Pink Heroes took him rather by storm.
Obviously he had not imagined that an army officer would take up the cudgels on behalf of such a notorious intellectual and peered at me with mild interest
when he enquired “You a journalist or something?”
My answer left him in no doubt that it takes more than three years in the army to make an officer and a gentleman!

Bill (his Army name) was Hedley Noel Beadle he produced a Press Cuttings book for 1939 now in Worcester Archives.
Attached is a cartoon by him from the book with a newspaper cutting about Oswald Moseley.

I once saw somewhere a cartoon possibly by Gyles, depicting a Tax Collector in a bowler hat filling in tax forms in the middle of a battle.
