Anyone have any information about the Canadian Forestry Corps? And about private Roy Lawrence Betts. He died in Belgium on December 17, 1944 and died of drowning. Casualty Private BETTS, ROY LAWRENCE Service Number K/72959 Died 17/12/1944 28 Coy. Canadian Forestry Corps Buried at GROESBEEK CANADIAN WAR CEMETERY Location: Gelderland, Netherlands Number of casualties: 2598 Cemetery/memorial reference: XX. A. 13. See cemetery plan
Initially buried at Hasselt Cemetery, Belgium. This was at the time of the German Ardennes action, so it could be part of the retreat.... A forestry specialist may have been involved in cutting timber for a temporary bridge, there is quite an extensive waterway system nearby....?

Hi, You should be able to access his service record for free via this link - https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin...os=3&queryId=5169d83714f9866bcea13fdc0d25f348 I can’t see any court of enquiry documents so these are the 2 most helpful documents concerning his death by drowning in the Albert Canal. Steve
Thanks. Over here we call it corduroy, making a roadbed with timber logs, similar to the ribbing on corduroy trousers.... 17th December, falling into a canal, perhaps a little too much pre Christmas celebration. I assume the death of Pte Ruppel mentioned has no connection?
