The North Dock Tufa is a small dome-shaped petrified well, with stalactites and stalagmites, tucked away behind the Marine Activities Centre at Sunderland marina. It was found during the redevelopment of the marina behind some old huts. It was preserved behind the newly constructed buildings but few people are actually aware of it . Hidden in a small courtyard it is publicly accessible by entering through the building but it is the only remaining part of the old landscape of the old North Dock prior to its redevelopment .

Thanks Jim, never knew it existed until this week . I was in Whitburn (South Tyneside) so popped along the road into Sunderland just to see what it was all about :)

I'm having technical issues (with what's twixt my ears I think :) ) with my reply. This might end up as a box-out within a box-out. Or outwith a box-out. Typed somewhere wrong again, pressed the wrong key, who knows (I certainly don't). Dotage central!

Made a trip to Germany last weekend. Visited Porta Westfalica, near Minden. Here the Weser River passes through a gorge in the mountain range of the Wiehengebrige and enters the plains of Northern Germany. At this point there is a colossal, late 19th century (it was inaugurated in 1896), monument for Kaiser Wilhelm I. Splendid view combined with a bit of history.

Enroute to Consett Co Durham (Cycleway 14) I came across these `Stainless Steel Sculptures` I knew Consett had one been a thriving Steel Manufacturer but have to admit I had to google these to find out the story behind them :-

    Terris Novalis stainless steel sculpture
    Terris Novalis by Tony Cragg
The work consists of two measuring instruments; a theodolite and an engineer's level, twenty times life size, standing approximately six metres tall. Made from stainless steel and supported on animal feet, this work is visible for many miles and stands as a monument to the history of the area and a prominent mile marker for the Coast to Coast cycle route.
The animal feet that hold these instruments were inspired by symbolic heraldry found on shields, coats of arms, plaques and similar items associated with the local land and ownership. Included are a bird of prey, a horse lion, crocodile, cow and a primate's hand. Cast in solid stainless steel, from originals carved by Tony Cragg, these large feet are beautifully cast
. The work sited at Consett, marks the watershed between the upland / moorland landscape and the extremes of the Industrial Age. Built on the Stanhope and Tyne Railway Line - the earliest commercial railway in Britain .
Terris Novalis marks what was once Europe's largest steel works. Local people apparently see this landmark as a monument to the scale of local industry and its ultimate demise :- unusual thing anyway .
