We got less snow than forecasted yesterday, but the amount that didn't fall yesterday fell today. Now there is a little over 8 cm (over 3 inches) of snow on the ground. The picture is from noon today.
Ah, they are plum and apple trees, they should be leafless at this point in the year here. The only spruce in our yard is that little one between the garden table and the pine tree next to the fence. A bit difficult to see because of the dark fence behind it. Too skinny for my taste, but some people like Christmas trees like that. The photo below is taken at noon local time today. The temperature is -1 deg C
Contrary to the forecast, the snow has not melted away but, on the contrary, more has fallen, now we have exactly 4 inches (10.2 cm) of snow. At the time of shooting, the temperature was -4.5 deg C.
Winter is here and how it happens, this week is our snowclearing turn, there was 9 cm snow at Wednesdays noon, the 1st photo, 26 cm at 1 o'clock PM on Thursday, the 2nd photo and 28 cm /11 inches now. The forecast promises about 10 cm / 4 inches more snow by Sunday. The other photos were taken during my daily walk on Thursday.
My son-in-law and grandson visited Helsinki in late September. They found it cold then. My grandson bought a hat which has now become part of his persona. It looks very warm.
Snowman needed in Finland, methinks. Nothing but carrots, real or cartoon, on TV adverts this year, with or without snowmen's faces to become noses upon. I think tangerines make better noses. Perhaps there is a different tradition in Finland, or you just get fed up with snow. ( Or wrong kind of snow- British joke or excuse for trains that cannot run if a quarter of an inch of snow falls.) In Essex I actually had to scrape frost from the car windows today for the first time this year of 2022. Keep warm. Our forecast is that we could get snow anywhere tomorrow. If that happens, total chaos will ensue. The man from the Met Office ( see above ) says: "This Evening and Tonight: Coastal wintry showers easing this evening, with clear skies developing, giving a widespread sharp frost inland. An area of wintry showers moves south overnight, possibly extending inland. Risk of ice. Minimum temperature -5 °C."
Even here in Finland, snowmen have a long tradition. I myself did some as a child and when our daughter was a child a few. A carrot for the nose and pebbles for the eyes and mouth. Here there was in the morning -11 degrees C, at noon -7 and now -12 degs C.
I have snow. It is strange how one can tell. Some primeval instinct. I woke up about 4am and went to look out of the window, not something I usually do especilly when it is cold. Sure enough there was snow slowly drifting down. Not much chance of it causing problems but the forecast is for it to remain below zero for some days. Yesterday morning I had to clear ice from inside the car as well as outside. Lovely clear skies and bright sunshine though. Mike
Lesley, you have to live above 600 feet to get reliable snow. Also it is warmer because you are nearer the sun. (Actually I just made the last bit up.) Mike
