Just a thought have you thought about applying for his service records from the MOD?

Hi, you can ring the MOD in Glasgow and ask for the forms you will need a death certificate, and the cost is £30. You will be amazed how much information can can get from them.
    Hope this helps,

PS. If he was Royal Monmouth Royal Engineers he wouldn't be REME.
    REME wasn't formed until 1942 ;)

I'd ask these chaps too if you're sure he was with them.

    Hi,

If you have access to a library you may be able to have a look on Ancestry POW records there for free - although if you are correct in stating he was repatriated in 1943 he may not be on the list which is based on 1945 data.

Red Cross in Switzerland will have some records but as they are currently digitising them for free online access they won't accept any more enquiries. Records may be online late 2016.

If he completed a liberation questionnaire on repatriation the original will be in the National Archives - several members here offer a look up service.

Your main source of information will be sending off for his service records as per the above advice. £30 well spent (Plus £9.25 for a death cert).

Ideally you need a service number but MOD will search on full name and DOB - both of which ought to be on the death certificate.

    Good Luck

    Hi

If your grandmother is still alive there will be no charge so you can get the service records for free if you apply in her name. PM me his details and I'll check at the National Archives this month to see if he completed a PoW Liberation report for you.

    Cheers
    Andy

Pre the Death registration act 1953. Only the age of the person was required.
After 1953 the age column was changed to Date and place of birth.
And Occupation was changed to Occupation and usual address.
so date of birth should be on there. However his service no will not be on there, only his occupation and address at the time of his death.
