I am looking for information about the 16 Battery 1st AA Regiment. As my Great Great Uncle was a Gunner in the 16 Bty 4th AA in 1939, he was posted on the 24/10/39 and then they unit changed to 16 Bty 1st AA regt with a date of 29/1/40. In his service records it states the he had leave to the UK on the 3/4/40, and then rejoined the Regt on the 14/4/40.
The next entry states the he is missing and the date states prior to 13/8/40 but the entry date is the 19/40. Then under that is CO RAA 19/40 16/1AA Prisoner of War but it is cross through.

The next entry is dated 10/41 Previously reported missing, body now reported to liaus (??? not sure what this is or if I have this right) been found near Borkum in France - date unknown location of grave unknown.

Then the last entry on this record is dated 3/4/42 from the War Office Letter stating he was still in the 16 Bty 1st AA - Drowned as a result of enemy action between 28/5/40 and 23/6/40.

I have found out the my Great Great Uncle is buried in Sage Cemetery in Oldenburg Germany.
Under the CWCG his is listed there.

Here are some details 1061323 Gunner Maurice Charles Bush, June 1940 France, Somerset Royal Artillery, 2nd AA Regt. and his grave in sage is (2D 10.)

If anyone can help me put things in order of the where abouts of this Bty and Regt and the more information I can add to this the more our family can add to this, And many Thanks now for any help given.

    Hi Mayfly56,

The war diary of 1 AA Regt records that 15, 16 and 17 Batteries were under command during the whole of May 1940 and up to 19 June 1940. Almost everyone appears to have been evacuated back to the UK by the 3rd June.

On the 20th June 1940, 1 AA Regt was reorganised at Aberystwyth. 15 Battery went to 6 AA Regt (later to be renamed 6 HAA Regt who were captured at Singapore/Java in early 1942) and 16 Battery went to 4 AA Regt (Later to become 4 HAA Regt). 1 & 2 Batteries rejoined from 4 AA Regt & 6 AA Regt respectively and 1 AA Regt now consists of it's pre-war batteries of 1, 2 & 17.

The entry on your Great, Great Uncle's service record would appear to be correct in having served in 16 Battery/1 AA Regt at the time of his capture/death and the one on CWGC wrong. There are another 27 men from 16 Battery recorded on CWGC, as having died between 31 May - 2 June 1940. Regt is 1 HAA Regt. Units were being renamed from AA to HAA during this period because of the creation of LAA Regiments.

    Cheers - Rob
