In 1944, she was refitted as a "fighter direction ship", for use during the Normandy landings in controlling fighter aircraft by ground-controlled interception, then as an "action information organisation" tender (a radar training ship) in 1946.

HMS Boxer was only taken in hand for refitting as a fighter direction ship AFTER D-Day (around the end of June 1944). She emerged from that refit in mid-1945 just in time to go to the Far East to participate in Operation Zipper, the invasion of Malaya. Photo of her as a FDS here.

In mid-1944 her two sister ships, Bruiser and Thruster, were also earmarked for conversion. Due to their usefulness in their original role moving men and equipment in the Med (to Southern France and then Greece) the conversion kept getting postponed until eventually cancelled.

Three LST(2), US built sisters of LST-1, were converted to Fighter Direction Tenders by John Brown on the Clyde in early 1944. They were completed in time for D-Day where one was sunk. FDT13 also went east in the summer of 1945.
