Hello, Does anyone have a history of the Madras Regiment that mentions a Lt. E. Crosse? He was in SE Asia (I presume with 4/3 MR) in 1945-46. Wondering if he was in Burma during the war, or served in India only. All the best, wilhar
I forgot to say that 4/3 Madras was not the only battalion of that regiment to serve in Burma. 1/3 Madras was in Burma and NEI. No battalion history, I’m afraid, but I do have a regimental history somewhere. It would be worth checking, if I could only find it! I’ll have another look when I recover from lifting all of those heavy archive boxes.
Thanks for that. You are right about 1/3 MR and now that I think about it he would have more likely been with them as he definitely went out to NEI in 45-46. My mistake — the perils of working from memory! It’s plausible he was in Burma during the war but not sure. Lookups appreciated if possible.
Well, I can’t find it. It must be hiding in the wrong box, so I will only find it by accident now. Just in case anybody else on here has it, the book I was looking for is; The Madras Regiment 1758-1958 by Lt.-Col. E. G. Phythian-Adams O.B.E.
Thank you. As someone in the midst of a move, and with my entire library consigned to boxes, I can empathize! I have The Madras Soldier by Phythian-Adams, but not The Madras Regiment.
This may indicate he did not serve in Burma? From a 2022 auction site entry: From: General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, S.E. Asia 1945-46 (Lt. E. Crosse, Madras. R.) nearly extremely
