Anyone ever visited? We are visiting Verdun (staying in Metz) and was thinking maybe visiting the Maginot Line. Any advice would be useful. Wesley Wright
Contact our member Marc, aka MLW. He's written a book on it & has a good website. http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/members/mlw.html
I suspect this may be his work: Maginot Line 1940: Battles on the French Frontier Campaign: Amazon.co.uk: Marc Romanych, Martin Rupp, John White: Books Another one that will probaly be easy to read knowing Osprey: Amazon.co.uk: Books: The Maginot Line 1928-45 (Fortress)
I got a CD off a local historical group down there, might be a useful reference tool, many pictures & maps Atlas CORF
Hi Wesley, I am full of ideas, but may I suggest you read this page from my website first to get basic information. Then I will be glad to answer any specific questions you may have. Visiting The Maginot Line There are several nice Maginot Line sites near Metz depending on how "touristy" you want to be. Regards, Marc
Thanks for all the information. As we are staying in Metz from Saturday and leaving Monday morning would it be possible to arrange a visit on Monday morning(28th June 2010) We are travelling back to St Omer so we could afford to spend 2-3 hrs on a visit. Wesley
Hi Wesley, Most fortifications that are open for visitation are only open on weekends, even in during tourist season. If they are open during the week, then it is normally in the afternoon. So, I am thinking that Monday morning is difficult. Your best best bet is either Gros Ouvrage Hackenberg near Metz (http://www.maginot-hackenberg.com) or Gros Ouvrage Fermont (Fort de Fermont) that could be along the way to St Omer. Regards, Marc
