Empire Amethyst (British Steam tanker) - Ships hit by German U-boats during WWII - uboat.net
At 05.52 hours on 13 April 1942 the unescorted Empire Amethyst (Master Geoffrey Durbridge Potter) was hit on the starboard side underneath the bridge and aft by two G7e torpedoes from U-154 while steaming on a zigzag course at 11 knots about 150 miles north-northeast of Aruba. The U-boat had chased the ship for almost 16 hours before reaching a favorable attack position and firing the torpedoes from a distance of less than 500 meters. The tanker immediately caught fire from stem to stern and broke in two after an explosion in the stern. The aft part sank after 5 minutes and the rest of the wreck 10 minutes later, leaving a large patch of oil that was seen to burn for two hours. The master, 40 crew members and six gunners were lost.
