Hi all, I am hoping to meet Miss April Meikle (93 years old) in the next few days. She lost 3 brothers in WW2; Colin Campbell Meikle, David William Meikle (both RAFVR) and a third brother Ian Ormiston Meikle with Airborne Artillery at Arnhem. April has generously offered the opportunity to copy her family photos and I would like to respond with as much info as I can find about the loss of her brothers. This is an enquiry generated by Philip Reinders with respect to Ian Meikle at Arnhem but I would like to widen it to all 3 brothers and so would ask for any information on Colin and David. Any info gratefully received and will be passed on to the Meikle family. Mike
Mike, I don't follow these things too well, but it seems an uncommon enough surname for me to ask if you know whether these chaps are related to the other Meikles in that twins thread? http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/16279-meikle-twins-durham-light-infantry.html
Sgt. Colin Campbell Meikle was lost in the following circumstances 6 June 1945 8FU Hurricane IV LD797 The pilot became lost on a sortie from Lahore via Palam to Poona because of poor weather and haze. After two and three quarter hours airborne and with fuel exhausted, the pilot attempted a forced landing but the aircraft stalled at 150 feet and spun into the ground at Bulandshahr, India. Thanks Peter, I will pass the information on. Adam, I remember that thread and posted on it(#43). According to the reply it is thought they are not related to the Hornchurch Meikles. The name is of Scottish origin and is apparently quite common in some parts.
I have been in contact with a journalist regarding the Meikle brothers and her article will hopefully appear in next weekends Daily Mirror. She has met one of the surviving sisters and obtained a good amount of further information about Ian and David Meikle but Colin is proving more difficult to trace. Peter Clare's info in post #3 is about as far as we have been able to get, I cannot find anything on '8FU' (fighter unit?) or similar named units in Lahore or India as a whole. Plenty of info about Lahore airfield but nothing on this particular unit. Any ideas anyone?

The ORB may give a clue as to where it's Estabishment of men and equipment was sent. The Form 1180 for LD797 records that Sgt Meilke (sic) had 42 hours solo on the type and had logged 216 solo hours experience in total. Regards Ross
