Jonathan Ball It's a way of life.

One of the very few memorials to a British Regiment on the Rhine.

Thanks for posting Jonathon and I'm curious now if there might not be a few others in the area that are 6th Airborne related ... ?

I'm fairly certain that it's the only memorial that's related to 6th Airborne. The LZ is now a large industrial park. The only period building in the area I saw was the station house that the glider of Charles Vickery of the RUR crashed into.

Its a shame its situated where it is.
Its outside the gates of a TNT distribution center
When i was there in 2010 it looked very unloved
Was it moved from the train station some 100 meters away?
Surely a much more fitting position given the fighting that went on there

odd that it says 'tree planted' but the sign is on a rock!

I believe that the memorial is where it is because this was where those of the 52nd LI who were killed in the operation were initially buried. They were all later removed and reinterred in the Reichswald War Cemetery.

When I visited the memorial a number of years ago I'm sure that the plaque was different. I will have to try and post a photo.

In the meantime there is a photo here on my website THE TALE OF A FEW BRIDGES - 2 OXF & BUCKS LI 1944-45 - LIGHTBOBS

I'm not sure if the tree died or the memorial was moved? Hopefully someone will know. The original memorial tree and plaque.
