    MERCHANT SEAMEN'S BRAVERY
    ...
    O.B.E.

    Captain William Samuel COUGHLAN, master.

The ship was torpedoed and quickly settled. The crew took to the four lifeboats and set out on their long voyage towards land. The master rationed food and water and kept the boats together. They sailed by day and each night he made them fast one to another. In this way the spirit of the whole company was kept high and, in spite of much suffering from heat, every one survived to be picked up on the tenth day. Captain Coughlan had long perfected the boat drill in his vessel, and his skill at sea was equal to every demand.

    Harry Charles CARTER, first mate.

The ship was torpedoes and at once began to sink. Three of the four boats were got away. Captain Gough rescued men from another stricken ship and trasferred them from a raft. When picked up 12 days later his first thought was for his other boats which, owing to rough weather, had parted company.

The master was again torpedoed on his way home and spent nearly four days in a lifeboat. Soon after his second rescue he took charge of salvage operations on a sunken ship. Captain Gough's seamanship and courage rose above every trial.

The first mate, in charge of the second boat, brought more than 20 survivors to safety after nearly 16 days on the open sea. Carter showed fine leadership and, in spite of great difficulties maintained strict discipline, and when they reached a neutral shore he cared well for his men.

    MERCHANT SEAMEN'S BRAVERY

    M.B.E.

    Derek Crawford GILCHRIST, third officer.

A merchantman was torpedoeed and sunk at night by a submarine. Six men were killed, but the rest got away in three boats. Five days later a ship picked up survivors from two of these, but the third, in chargeo of Gilchrist, with nine Europeans and 21 Indians in her, was not picked up until 25 days later. The third officer hoisted sail, and set his course by the stars. He rationed food at half a biscuit, a spoonful of condensed milk and half a dipper of water for each man morning and evening, and while it lasted a little meat for those who kept watch.

From the beginning Gilchrist set a high standard, and his strict discipline gave everyone a feeling of security. Wathes were changed punctually, and rations strictly given out, and silence was kept in the boat from sunset until dawn. It was very hot, and daily the men grew weaker. When rain came it was with such violence that they were drenched, and sat huddled together shivering with cold and unable to sleep. Gilchrist, who is only 24 years of age, never let them despair, and his courage and endurance sustained them all.

PETER PATRICK CROXFORD, Ordinary Seaman, M/V Sussex.

Captain Clarke'ship was hit by two bombs. One wrecked the funnel, wireless, bridge, chartroom, compasses, and chronometers, the other started a fire in the wool cargo. The aircraft signalled "stop" but this was ignored and accurate fire from the ship#s gun kept the enemy at a distance. In a wooden locker was 40 tons of cordite and all efforts were concentrated on keepig the cordite wet. Assistant Steward Trundley climbed on the locker and cheerfully remained there directing the hose.

    Mr. DONALD KERR, Chief Officer.

When the ship was shelled at point-blank range by a submarine, a number of men, including the Master, were killed or injured. After staying behind to see all others off, the Chief Officer was pulled into the water by the suction from a shell and was not picked up until some two hours later. He showed great coolness and courage throughout.

    CAPTAIN CHARLES PARRY, Master
Mr. JOHN JENNER SIMMONS, Chief Engineer

Captain Parry's ship was torpedoed aft and abandoned. As it was then seen that the ship was not sinking, the Master, the Chief Engineer, and volunteers returned and the vessel was taken in tow. The wind rose to a gale and the tow parted. The Chief Engineer, single-handed, raised steam and the ship was in the end handed over to salvage tugs.

    BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL (CIVIL DIVISION)
    NICHOLAS KIELY, Able Seaman

When enemy aircraft attacked this officer's ship 10 of the crew were killed and three injured. Bell cut the rafts adrift, lowered the damaged but seaworth lifeboats and, althought the vessel was settling fast, got the wounded Master and Second Mate aboard. A violent explosion then threw everyone into the water and blew the boats to pieces. Helped by Able Seaman Kiely, the Second Engineer took a raft and resuced everyone whom he could see, including the Master and Second Mate. Both of these officers died of their wounds.

ALLARD, ELLIOT, Gunlayer, ss. City of Brussels

    COMMENDED
    MURRAY, CAPTAIN THOMAS NEILSON, Master
    SINCLAIR, A.W., Chief Officer
    MACDONALD, ALEC, Second Officer
    GALLACHER, JOSEPH, Fireman
    WEBSTER, FREDERICK CHARLES, Fireman
all of the City of Brussels.

The s.s. City of Brussels, after unloading cargo at Brussels, was attacked at evening by two enemy aircraft. Allard at once opened fire with a 12-pounder. The first shot, bursting between the two machines, caused one of the aircraft to shoot up into the air and then to fall to the ground. The second aircraft, obviously damaged, rapidly lost height and was reported also to have fallen. In this gallant action the gunlayer was ably supported by this loaders. Firemen Webster and Gallacher. The Master and officers, by their unfailing courage and confidence during the attack, inspired the whole crew of the vessel.

    all of the Mavis.

The s.s. Mavis, armed with a 12-pounder H.A. and a Lewis gun, was attacked continuously by enemy bombers. A delayed action bomb shattered the ship, but the bomber, who came within close range, appeared to be struck by one of the Mavis's shells and flew off emitting a trail of smoke. The crew took to the boats, under fire from another aeroplane. Some hours later, seeing that the ship was still afloat, the crew boarded her again. Continuous bombing and machine-gun attacks followed: the lifeboat with six men broke adrift. During further bombing the captain, with the remaining five men, took to a raft. They were landed by a French patrol vessel in France, where the captain secured a tug and set out towards his ship to try and save her. Before the tug had proceeded fare she blew up in a magnetic mine, four of her crew of five becoming casualties. The Mavis herself was reported to have sunk soon afterwards. In the most trying circumstances the captain and the whole ship's crew had behaved throughout most gallantly.

THOMAS, CAPTAIN RICHARD, Master, s.s. Worthtown

    BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL (CIVIL)
    FRANCIS VICTOR YATES, Gunner
    WILLIAM HUDSON JENSEN, Gunlayer
    both of the Worthtown

The Worthtown, loaded with army stores for Boulogne and Dunkerque, reached Boulogne and began discharging under heavy shell fire. To save her cargo, the master put out to sea. Though bombed the vessel was brought alongside the quay at Dunkerque. For four days there were incessant bombing raids and Captain Thomas's ship was hit, set on fire, and sunk. The Worthtown being sunk, the master - for transit in whose ship 350 British troops had been waiting in a dug-out on the quay - waited for nightfall and then led these troops to Malo sands, four miles away. Next morning they regained Dunkerque pier and were taken aboard a destroyer. Captain Thomas behaved with fine gallantry and determination, both in his ship and ashore. The gunners served there guns unflinchingly throughout day-long bombing and machine-gun attacks and brought down one of the enemy.

AWARDS TO CREW OF THE HIGHLANDER
    DESTRUCTION OF TWO AEROPLANES
Awards to the master and crew of the ss Highlander, which shot down two enemy aircraft last Thursday, were announced in the London Gazette last night as follows:-

    O.B.E. (CIVIL DIVISION)
Captain Wiliam Gifford, Master, ss. Highlander

    BRITISH EMPIRE MEDAL (CIVIL DIVISION)
    Bert Whyman, fireman
    George Anderson, able seaman
    both of the Highlander

    COMMENDED
    William Birnie, able seaman
    Laurence Smith Halcrow, steward
    Miss Cockburn, stewardess
    all of the Highlander

Towards midnight ss. Highlander was attacked by enemy aircraft. The night was clear and starry, but there was no moon. The aircraft came up and opened fire with machine-guns, and turned to attack again from ahead, passing down the port side. The enemy were engaged with defensive armament.

As the first aircraft flew down the port side from ahead, Highlander's fire caused his port wing to hit a lifeboat and he crashed on the poop. His fuselage fell into the sea and Highlander went on her way.

The second attack was made about 10 minutes later, the same tactics being used. This time the enemy was hit and seen to fall into the sea 100 yards astern. A third aircraft is believed to have been heard.
