Are there photos from the crime scene, would they show him in uniform - thinking aloud here. What about witness reports would his wife (if he had one) have made a statement, other policeman?? - "yes I saw him leave the station at XX:yy hrs to patrol along ABC street"

General public statements ?? all these must be archived somewhere

The name Stump is pretty common in South-West Germany, e.g. Black Forest. So, I guess his roots are around there - RIP

The name Stump is also found in the South East of England, with it being most common in 1998 around St Albans. It’s index is 239 per 1 million of the UK population.

It’s likely that there is a large cross-over of names between Germany and particularly, England, given that (except for Cornwall) the Country was eventually predominantly Anglo-Saxon - or Angles, Jutes and Saxons - all of which are Germanic races. Even the later invasion by the Danes was of people from the same geographic area as the Angles, Jutes and Saxons. Our Royals have been of German extraction since 1714.

I noted that Clive’s research was on a man named Fritz George William Stump, but that the name “Fritz” is not mentioned in the Newspaper article announcing his death.

When I first sent details to the Police Roll of Honour they checked the death cert and their reply below confirms the dropping of the name then full name on GRO

His death was registered twice, probably first without the Fritz and then corrected. The GRO's own index will only accept his full name beginning with Fritz, which suggests that is correct. I suspect his father was a German immigrant, but quite understandably, it appears the family did not use it during the War.
It is also not the first Metropolitan police death of the period where the officer had anglicised a German/Jewish name.

Confirmation today that Metropolitan War Reserve Police Constable Fritz George William Stump has been accepted for commemoration Police Roll Of Honour Trust
That you for your input and help.

    Dear Clive,
I am most grateful that you have supplied the Trust with details of the death of Fritz STUMP who was on duty as a war reserve at the time of his death. We will show the officer on our website and his name will be published in our Roll of Remembrance book bearing all of the known police deaths. A copy is on display in the Police Memorial in The Mall which displays the names of those who have died “on this day”. The book will be reprinted in the late Spring and will include Stump’s details. His details will also be shown in a book available to purchase later this year.

Do give us a little time to have the details shown on our website.

This chap has lain in his grave for 79 years and has finally been recognised as died whilst performing his duty
His family by the epitaph on his grave knew this but it was not recognised until now.
