    Hi

I wonder whether anyone can help me? I am trying to find out the composition and exact role of an 83 Group RAF Mobile Signals Unit as they would have been at the time of Op Overlord and later.
    Thanks

    Mike

  3. Hi, I’m trying to find out more information about my father who was part of the British Liberation Army. He was attached to 80 Signals Wing as a Wireless Operator, 2TAF , 100 Group. He was in Belgium in February/ March 45 and on the road to Saarbruken from Metz in April 45. He was with a mobile signals unit jamming German radio signals and looking for the V1/V2 rocket sites.
He left Germany in September 45 before being posted to Madras , India.
I have photos of him that confirm these dates and locations in Europe and he seems to be with an American officer near Saarbruken.
I have his service record and his name is : Corporal Walter Geoffrey Robinson , RAFVR Service Number:1735428
I’m struggling to find out which unit he was with. Does anybody know where I could possibly find out this information? He would have been 100 this year!
    Thank you,
    Andrew Robinson

Hi, Andrew. This sounds really interesting!
You should be able to apply for his service record. Last I heard, there was quite a backlog, but still worth doing. (See the attached link.) They can also be a bit hard to decipher but - again - worth doing. The Americans went through the Saarbrucken/Metz area - 21st Army Group (Brits, Canadians and Poles) went further north. My point is that I suspect (guess?) that his unit was attached to the Americans - which is far from being unlikely.
Good luck with the detective work. :)

    Andrew,

Not the best place to post this request for help, as the subject is specific to a unit. You could post it again, saying it was here originally. The area for such research is: Searching for Someone & Military Genealogy

Looking around there are few mentions of 80 Signals Wing before the D-Day invasion, such as "bending radio waves" beforehand. See: "Knickebein" beacon

  6. Thank you for your input and advice.I have my father’s service record but unfortunately it only mentions being attached to 80 Wing at this time. However, it also mentions 21 O.T.U which I understand to be 21 Operational Training Unit based at Moreton Le Marsh,in Gloucestershire. This could be a clerical error.
My older brother does remember my father talking about the better quality US rations so he could have been attached to the Americans near Saarbruken.
I will follow your advice and post on the site you mentioned. Thanks again, Andy
