Has anyone got any suggestions re finding general info about Movement Control in the Middle East - RE Museum?? (but which one?). I know there are a number of undigitised war diaries but the record I am looking at simply has "MC Cyprus" and periods in Greece, Crete and Egypt with no specifics. What was the role of a checker in an MC unit? I am looking for a broad brush rather than anything specific about any one unit. Max
There is/was a Movement Control veterans association online. From memory, their 'library' was members only, but it might be worth contacting them
This is probably going to be of use, my copy is stored away somewhere but I can try look it out this afternoon - I can't remember what's in it, there is a nominal roll
I've looked it out and it is basically a nominal roll - is there a particular name you want checked? the only other info is a few lists of ports/beach heads/HQ's they served - nationalities they moved and so on, no details of operations
Thank you for taking the trouble AB64. Back soonest with the name (I have his record without that detail). His record tells me where he was and when, would it be too much to ask to see the other details if it is feasible (perhaps via a message?) Idler thank you - found it!. Max.
AB64 - Thank you again for your trouble - brilliant. Is there a Spr Andrew McCabe 2001405 in the nominal rolls? Max
Seems to be a record of MC that went out with 1st Army (or similar) rather than the ME Command MC in Cairo. Was he in ME Command in Cairo and elsewhere?
Paperwork says 1,000,000 very important widgets have been sent out urgently from UK. CO of unit in Egypt has been asked to confirm all have arrived. Checker sent out to docks or stores or wherever widgets now reside to confirm 1,000,000 very important widgets have indeed arrived. Perhaps with a handcount.
Note for a moderator. Perhaps this thread would better reside somewhere more appropriate than in the 21st Army Group section of the forum.
He transited through Egypt a couple of time betwen other places only (so didn't get the Africa Star). He went out initially under GHQ ME in Jan 1941 then 7 MC Group and then to MC Cyprus Greece and Crete (there when the Germans invaded and was evacuated).. MC 15 s (sub?) /Area MC 25 Corps and MC 9th Army and MC Levant all mentioned. Checker now makes sense thank you! MaxD
Hi AB64 Its a bit late, but I just came across this post whilst looking for something else. Is there a name of John Gray, Army Number 2133808 in the nominal roll? Trevor
Hi AB64 Thanks for taking the time to look for me. I do know that Dad was there, serving with 1015DOC then 1056DOC (Later 1056POC) - would have been nice to have seen his name in some sort of publication! Thanks again Cheers Trevor
