Mystery at Birkdale Cemetery

So I was at Birkdale Cemetery recently (near Southport) and the map at the entrance gates refers to a "Civilian Casualties War Memorial".

Now, I've been here plenty of times and never seen any such memorial, and sure enough there's nothing at the place marked on the map.

Enquiries at the cemetery office have been a bit confusing. Their first email said that the area had an "official marked stone", but after sending the photos and asking what I was meant to be looking at, they said there was "no official marker on this area". But they have said that this is the area where civilian war casualties from 1940 were laid to rest in individual graves. I've asked for the details of those buried there, and so far haven't received any further response.

So who is actually buried here? Southport County Borough only reported 35 casualties for the whole of the war, and I can account for the burials of all except two or three. There are five civilians buried at Birkdale Cemetery, but in private graves elsewhere.

    Bit of a mystery!
