I think it's an eerie kind of sound. Just watching that clip of The guns of Navarone and I thought, if the sound is meant to be alerting the men to battle stations, why does it sound at the end? They would have already been there if they'd just won the battle.
Were you able to listen to any of these? I couldn't get them to play. I can't get to hear them either, odd. Glad we've sorted this one out.
I can't get to hear them either, odd. Glad we've sorted this one out. Seems a problem typically of sistems based in Windows. You must will asigned your Favourite multimedia player Windows Media Player Real Player I-Tunes In ocassions, the installation of external players or aplications for burn discs as Nero produce minor fails in the system, and the result is these: No sound. In the diferent versions of Windows W95 .....> Windows Vista, is similar this adjust, but writed with diferent words and places of your Operating System. I hope you understand me, dear Owen.... Jan.
A very eerie sound must be the RMS Titanic's whistle, recovered in 1993. Sound file on this website: All Things TITANIC - RMS Titanic pictures, blueprints and text documents (go to Resources on the left hand menu, then click the sounds link)
I believe the sound you are referring to is actually a 'steam whistle', commonly fitted to the front of ship's funnels. You can usually see a small cloud of steam condensing at the front of the funnel when the whistle is used. To the best of my knowledge the whistle was used for communication between ships and when in harbour, not as a ship's alarm. I think there was a code list eg 7 blasts, 'I am sinking'. The whistle was also used for 'salutes' eg the 'cock-a-doodle-do' or, as at the end of The guns of Navarone, as a long blast. That rising tone makes the hair at the back of my neck stand up! Mike
Just watched last 20 minutes of 'The Yangtse Incident' , heard the woop woop woop at the end of that.
If you see "In Harms Way" (John Wayne), a Japanese force, when stumbling into a minefield and losing several destroyers start giving the Three blast warnings. Regards Tom
Sorry, guys. I can't listen to or watch anything above. But this whole thread just reminded me of one of my all time favourite bits of nonsense. An old mate of mine was working for someone and, finding things a bit tight in the week, he sidled up to his employer ..... " 'Ere, Boss? Ye couldn't let me have a sub, could ye? " To which, without hesitation, his governor replied; " No, mate. But I can do ye a Frigate, leaving the harbour ..... ' Vrooop! VROOOP!! '. Even my mate couldn't help but piss himself at that one! Classic!
The sound you described is the ship's steam siren. It was used to signal a ships intentions when manoevering. I'm not sure of the different codes but three in succesion I believe meant, "I am going astern". Hope this helps. Cheers, Neil
Is that available as a ring tone, though I don't think it would work on mine ? Tryhttp://www.ramrcandramtrack.com/sound/Ram61.wav Jan.
