    Hello

Does anyone have a copy of any of Neil Orpen's volumes or any other books concerning the South African Commonwealth forces during WW2 and would be willing to do any look-ups for me? (It would save me buying them all for only limited usage, especially since some of these out-of-print volumes only appear to be in sale in SA.)

I am seeking information on the service of several of their regiments, principally in their campaigns N. Africa 1940-42, in East Africa and with the 8th Army, and also the 6 SA Amoured Division in Italy 1944-45 but there is only so much that is available on-line.

If anyone has such books please leave a post and I will get back to you... and Gerry, did you have much to do with the South Africans in Italy?

    Thanks in advance.

    Cheers
    Richard

    Hello Richard,

The only occasion my Regiment worked in conjunction the
6th SA Armoured was during the break through the Argenta Gap on Tuesday 10th April 1945. The details are little known to me (but will try to find out more) due to what is recorded in my narrative:
"03.45 Hours. All was quiet as the Squadron waited for the word to go. Suddenly, a jeep came to a screeching halt beside Ballyrashane, the driver bringing an urgent message for Major Sidebottom. Without waiting for an answer, the Jeep turned around speeding off whence it came. When Skipper finished reading it, he ordered Alan Hughes (the gunner) to run over to 2 Troop to tell Cpl Wiggins to report to him immediately. Then turning to me, he said the never-to-be forgotten words, "Gerry, collect your kit, you are going home on leave!" Skipper went on to tell me to wait at the farmhouse (which had been the Squadron's HQ) where transport would be coming to pick me up. A few moments later, when Jimmy Wiggins appeared, being so thrilled by the news, I almost forgot to give him the frequencies for the next two days!"
