    Elite? Don’t make me laugh.

An Aldi bag for life is more useful than a new Ranger unit.

Little did we guess in November 2021 that the video we watched was of an army whose tanks would soon be reduced to rusting, turret-less hulks; whose preparedness was flawed by corruption; whose infantry required reinforcement by men with little or no training and equipment; and whose Air Force could not achieve air supremacy.

Whilst I don't agree with Russia's invasion of Ukraine one bit, we need to acknowledge that without the support offered by the West, Ukraine would be in a different situation than it is now.

That is true , however the west could not allow the rolling over of Ukraine and this has proved (at great human cost) the Russia bear is sadly lead by smoke screen and mirrors.

All your points are absolutely true.

    I ask you though:-

If the Mahdi Army in Iraq had received the same global support in 2004, that Ukraine is receiving now - i.e money, range of weaponry, overseas training opportunities, US advisors, sanctions etc, how would the British Army have fared in Southern Iraq?

I'm not trying be a knob here, I am interested to hear your thoughts.

I do not have knowledge of that.My point and perhaps self centered is that the war in Ukraine has a super power (well we all know now they are not) trying to push boundaries and taking over a sovereign county with a a possible thought process of moving into other former communist states.

If ‘ifs’ and ‘ands’ were pots and pans. Or put more prosaically ‘if my aunty had balls she would be my uncle’.

The western powers would seem to have learnt the lessons of the 1930s and that sitting on your hands and doing nothing in the face of a dictator’s appetites is not a very successful tactic. Presumably Putin was banking on the West repeating its historical mistakes.

The forum culturally by and large doesn't deal in counter factual questions. I think the problem is that there is no right answer to this or similar questions. Imagine a host of ill-informed people joining the forum and starting such discussions about WW2. Because there is no actual right answer I could imagine the arguments would never end.

Not to mention that some of those counter factuals would no doubt be posed by Nazi-lovers.

What actually gives The Ranger Regt "elite" status ?

Is there a Ranger version of P Company or anything that makes them "special" ?

Role, selection process and training, I guess. Looks like they are only open to those who are already serving in the Army so more or less experienced soldiers.

Article from Forces page from last year

    Ranger Regiment Selection

Cadre Course – A two-week assessment that selected individuals from throughout the entire Army can tackle, judging their aptitude from the start.
Ranger Course – The second stage sends successful Cadre Course applicants on a six-week course. This could take place in a number of places, - including outside the UK.

Those who pass through the Ranger Course then join a Ranger battalion for eight months of training.

This includes fundamental and mission-specific skills training and special role training.
There is also operational partner training at this stage, which will prepare personnel for interaction with foreign UK partners (training, advising and, if necessary, accompanying them).
All personnel who are moving from the Army's Specialised Infantry Battalions to form the Ranger Regiment's 'all arms' battalions will have passed the Cadre Course and Ranger Course already.
Those who fail to pass the courses will return to their cap badges. For example: if someone from 1 SCOTS fails, they would join 2 SCOTS or 3 SCOTS.
The Ranger Regiment will be underpinned by emotional intelligence, linguistic skills (these will be taught but personnel must have the capability to learn) and an ability to work in small teams.
A diverse skill set will be required or taught (areas of specialism will vary, but examples could include medic or dog handling capabilities).
