I thought it would be appropriate to share the news of a new memorial on this particular day as it's the seventy-eighth anniversary of the event it commemorates, 7th April 1944.
After many years of discussion and planning my vision of erecting a memorial in memory of my father's runner Private William Howard has finally come to fruition. With full permission from his family and the enthusiastic help of friends in Manipur India a large engraved stone monolith has been erected on the battlefield at the eastern perimeter of Lion Box Kanglatongbi where Pte. Howard was killed. With work still in progress to tidy up the area it is possibly unique as a private memorial in Manipur as Pte. Howard has no known grave and is only commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial. The Howard Memorial, as it is called, also commemorates the gallant British and Indian defenders of Lion Box who also fought and died there during a three day action defending the largest Ordnance Depot on the Imphal Plain.

My thanks go to Arjun Jogi and Khem Pokhrel the landowners upon which the memorial stands for their great generosity and to Rajeshwor Yumnam and the team from 2WWICF for their assistance without whom this project would not have happened.
